Sugarbeeters, Hawks honored

Chinook, C/J-I standouts earn Northern C football honors

The Chinook Sugarbeeters had a tremendous football season. They won the Northern C Conference championship and made it all the way to the Class C 8-man state championship game before falling to Wibaux. So when the Northern C All-Conference and Class C All-State teams were announced, it was no surprise to see them littered with Beeters.

In an impressive haul, the Beeters earned four All-State selections, highlighted by Gavin Gunderson. The others who earned All-State honors were Lane Seymour, Jesse Daniels and Kevin Young.

The only other local player who earned All-State honors in 8-man football was Justin May of Chester/J-I. He made it for the second consecutive season as both a linebacker and running back. He led the Hawks to a 4-4 record in 2014.

The other big honor for the Beeters went to head coach Scott Friede, who shared the Northern C Coach of the Year Award with Belt’s Jeff Graham. Friede, who was previously the head coach at Chinook from 1994-99, guided Chinook to a 10-3 record and the doorstep of a state championship.

When it came to the Northern C All-Conference Team, Chinook had four players earn First-Team honors. Seymour was the only Chinook player to be awarded First Team on both offense and defense, earning the designation at both inside linebacker and wide receiver.

Dannels and Young, the other Chinook players voted onto the First Team, both made it as defensive lineman. May was the only player from C/J-I to make the First Team and like Seymour, he did on both sides of the ball as a running back and linebacker.

Gunderson, the only Chinook player to earn All-State honors but not be named First-Team All-Conference, made Second Team at both running back and linebacker. Dannels was the only Beeter to make the Second-Team offense, earning his way on as a guard.

Ian McIntosh, who quarterbacked Chinook during its magical run toward the state title game, earned All-Conference Honorable Mention, while Travis Hamilton was Honorable Mention at center for the Beeters.

On the defensive side of the ball, Derek Bell was named Honorable Mention at inside linebacker and Wyatt Lechner earned Honorable Mention on the defensive line to round out the honors for Chinook. Closing things out for C/J-I included Brandon Richter earning Honorable Mention as a linebacker and Brandon Theel, who made it as a defensive lineman.
