In her latest novel “Bittersweet,” Colleen McCullough, author of “The Thorn Birds,” has journeyed back to Australia to give us a romantic saga of four sisters living in the tumultuous times of the 1920s and 1930s.

The two sets of twins are the daughters of a minister from the Church of England and have been raised to be proper, well-educated ladies. Together the Latimer sisters decide to enroll in a training program for nurses — a new option for women. They will be on the ground floor of a new program which will educate women in the new field of sciences and nursing.
