Havre speech wins in Great Falls

Special to the Daily News

Havre High School speakers faced tough competition in the two-day Electric City Invitational Speech Tournament in Great Falls, bringing home the trophy in the Class ABC competition.

Stanford-Geyser took second in the ABC competition, with Cut Bank taking third.

“This was a nice showing,” head coach Tim Leeds said. “These two-day meets bring a lot of quality competitors, and with most of the schools AA, it ratchets up the competition a bit.”

Sophomore Ethan Smith led the way for the Blue Ponies, taking seventh place in serious oral interpretation of literature.

Fellow Havre speaker Mina Everingham, a junior, almost made it on stage with Smith, breaking into semifinals in serious oral interpretation.

A half dozen Ponies broke into semifinals to make it into the top sixteen along with Smith and Everingham. Desiree Bachmeier, Alex McDermott and Esther Stocker, all freshmen, competed in semifinals in original oratory, while sophomore Kristen Belcourt made semis in expository speaking as did junior Chris Steinmetz in memorized public address.

All of Havre’s debate squad also scored points for the Blue Pony win with victories in rounds, with junior Trenton Parrotte and sophomore Trenton Smith competing in varsity team policy debate and Jacob Bachmeier and Patrick Leeds, both juniors, competing in varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate.

The team now will work to stay focused over Christmas break before competing at the Fergus County High School invitational in Lewistown Jan. 10.
