Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Knights, Hawks sweep in Chester

Rocky Boy wins twice at Native American Classic

The season-opening weekend of girls basketball on the Hi-Line was as big as it gets. With big tournaments in Havre and Chester, there was plenty of hoops action to go around.

At the Chester/J-I Tournament, things got started Thursday as the defending District 9C champion Chinook Sugarbeeters battled their way to a season-opening win over Simms, 43-33. The game was tight until Chinook scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to pull away. Hannah Weber and Katelyn Neibauer each scored 16 points for the Beeters.

Also in Chester, North Star opened its season with a victory Thursday. The Knights dominated Helena Christian 56-34, as Sheridan O'Neil scored 17 points, and Alissa Borlaug scored 12 and Mackenzie Hansen chipped in with 10.

In Havre, the annual Native American Classic opened Thursday night with a Hi-Line rivalry game as Class C Box Elder toppled Class B Harlem, 48.32. The Bears led 25-13 at halftime and never looked back.

In the win, Box Elder got 11 points each from Leilani Gardipee and Tyrah Gopher. Ticia Cliff paced Harlem with 12 points, while Brooke LaValdo added nine.

On a busy Friday at the NAC, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars opened their season with a 50-31 win over the Browning Junior Varsity team. The Morning Stars raced out to a 20-5 lead in the first quarter. Jai Lynn Daychild led the Morning Stars with 14 points.

In Chester Friday, the C/J-I Hawks opened their season with a 46-37 victory over Helena Christian. The Hawks trailed 16-10 after the first quarter, but fought their way back for the win. Allix Goldhahn poured in a game-high 22 points for the Hawks, while Peyton Cole chipped in with nine.

North Star also picked up its second win Chester. Friday, the Knights clobbered Valier 60-36. Mackenzie Hansen scored 19 points, while Sheridan O'Neil added 13 and nine rebounds in the win.

Things didn't go as well for the Big Sandy Pioneers in Chester. The Pioneers were thumped by Roy-Winifred, 64-6 Friday afternoon. The young Big Sandy squad managed just two points in three different quarters. Jenna Leader scored four.

Meanwhile, the Fort Benton/Geraldine co-op got off to a good start this weekend. The Longhorns opened their season Friday, beating Foothills Christian 56-23. A 23-1 run in the first quarter was all the Longhorns needed, while Cassidy McCarthy scored 15 points.

The second game of the weekend was much tougher for the Longhorns, but Saturday, they managed to pull out a 34-29 win over former 8C rival Centerville. The Longhorns led 20-11 at halftime, but an 8-0 Centerville run in the third quarter made the game much closer. McCarthy scored 14 points and Caya Nack added 11 in the win.

The NAC wrapped up Saturday in Havre, and Harlem got its first win of the young season, as the Wildcats trounced 2B rival Poplar, 62-27. Harlem outscored the Indians 39-8 in the middle quarters on the way to the win. Brooke LeValdo scored 16 points while Mary Ereaux added nine.

And in the final game of the tournament at the Armory Gymnasium, two old rivals collided. But Rocky Boy proved too much for the Box Elder Bears in a 59-37 win. Box Elder led 18-17 at halftime, but the Morning Stars kicked their offense into high gear, outscoring the Bears 42-20 the rest of the way.

Jai Lynn Daychild scored 14 points to pace the Morning Stars, while Rosie Parker added 13 and Jurnee LaForge chipped in with 10. Box Elder was led by Alyssa LaMere's 14 points.

The tourney action also came to a close in Chester Saturday, where the C/J-I Hawks improved to 2-0. The Hawks edged former 10C rival Valier, 45-36. An 8-3 run by the Hawks in the third quarter gave them just enough of a cushion to hold on for the win. Allix Goldhahn scored 18 points for C/J-I.

Also in Chester, Chinook suffered its first loss, as the Beeters couldn't get past Roy-Winifred. The Outlaws beat the Beeters 48-38, behind a 17-9 fourth-quarter run. In the loss, Katelyn Neibauer scored 22 points, but the Beeters' offense struggled for much of the game.

Finally, the Big Sandy Pioneers fell to 0-2 with a 62-12 loss at the hands of Simms Saturday in Chester. Jenna Leader, Andrea Rutledge and Jessica Roth combined for all 12 of the Pioneers' points.
