LHS students spend day doing community service

Special to Havre Daily News

Students from Leadership High School spent Thursday doing hands-on volunteer work and learning what services local agencies provide to the Havre community.

Students spent the day doing work at:

• Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen

• Havre Food Bank

• The Salvation Army's Havre Service Center

• Northern Montana Health Care's Care Center.

The objective of the day's program was to provide the students with an opportunity to see firsthand the help that is provided by local agencies during the holiday and throughout the year.

The day also gave the students the experience of volunteering and the vital need volunteering plays in the community, said Debbie Vandeberg, executive director of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce, who heads up Leadership High School.

The day wrapped up with the students doing some shopping from the Salvation Army's Giving Tree project.

Comments from the students following this experience say it all:

"It made me feel good to know that I was doing good for the community."

"I loved it, volunteering made me feel great," another one said.

The program is a partnership between Havre Public Schools and the Chamber.

The January program gives the Leadership High School students a chance to see how city and county governments work.

In February the focus will be on life skills and March wraps up the program with Career Day and a lunch in their honor.
