Girls Hi-Line Roundup: Beeters, Hawks sweep 9C games

The year of girls high school basketball is already in the books. But don’t worry, the action will return in just over a week. The last games of 2014 were played this past weekend, and Monday, and there was plenty of excitement along the Hi-Line.

Last Tuesday, the Turner Tornadoes kicked off their season with a 39-28 win over the Havre High freshman team in Turner. The Tornadoes started the game on an 11-0 run and ended it with an 11-5 run.

Kristina Conlan scored 15 points for Turner, while Ella Billmayer added 12 and Rennay Watkins scored 10. Logan Huebsch scored seven for the Blue Ponies.

As the action moved to Friday night, the Chester/J-I Hawks and Fort Benton/Geraldine Longhorns made their official District 9C debut

In Box Elder, C/J-I turned away the host Bears 49-37. C/J-I trailed in the second half, but finished the game on a 23-7 run. Allix Goldhahn poured in a game-high 26 points for C/J-I, while Leilani Gardipee scored 10 for the Bears.

The Longhorns also picked up a road win in their 9C debut. In Big Sandy, Fort Benton/Gerladine cruised to a 58-14 win. The Longhorns led 26-8 at halftime and never looked back.

Cassidy McCarthy led four Longhorns in double figures with 12 points, while Maddy Reichelt scored six for the Pioneers.

Defending 9C champion Chinook also earned its first league win of the new season Friday night. In Chinook, the Sugarbeeters trounced Hays-Lodge Pole 60-11. Chinook started the game on a 20-5 run and the Thunderbirds never threatened.

Katelyn Neibauer led the way with 20 points, but the Beeters also got 16 from Brooke Nicholson and 14 by Hannah Weber. Kenessa Shambo scored seven points for HLP.

In Turner, the North Star Knights proved to be too much for the Tornadoes. Behind a 21-3 second-quarter run, the Knights rolled to a 53-17 victory. Mackenzie Hansen scored 16 points and Sheridan O’Neil added 12 for the Knights. Raegan Conlan, Kristina Conlan and Ella Billmayer each scored four for the Tornadoes.

In Class B action Friday night, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars rolled to their third straight win. In Rocky Boy, the Morning Stars thumped Cut Bank 79-59 in a District 1B battle. A 24-11 run in the third quarter helped the Morning Stars pull away. Four Morning Stars scored in double figures, led by Minnie The Boy’s 17 points. Jai-Lynn Day Child added 15 in the win.

Harlem also fell to Wolf Point Friday night, then the Wildcats lost a heartbreaker to Plentywood Saturday.

The big game Saturday night took place at North Star where the Knights were stunned by up-start Box Elder 59-35, The Knights were heavy favorites coming in, but the Bears jumped out to a 20-4 lead after the first quarter. The game tightened in between, but a 16-7 finish pushed the Bears to an important 9C victory.

Leilani Gardipee and Alicia Wolf Chief combined for 27 points for the Bears, while Tia Russell and Alyssa LaMere added 10 each. Alissa Borlaug scored a game-high 20 points for North Star, but it wasn’t enough.

In Chinook Saturday night, the Sugarbeeters moved to 2-0 in conference play with a dominating 61-11 win over the Big Sandy Pioneers. Brooke Nicholson led the way with 16 points for the Beeters, while Hannah Weber added 12 and Brooke Elliot scored nine. The 0-4 Pioneers got four points by Jenna Leader.

C/J-I also made it a weekend sweep with crushing 62-10 win at Hays-Lodge Pole Saturday night. The Hawks then turned around and trounced Turner, 51-27 in Chester. In that win, the Hawks got 17 points by Allix Goldhahn and 16 from Peyton Cole, while Raegan Conlan scored eight points for the Tornadoes.

On other 9C action Monday night, HLP scored its first win of the season by knocking off Big Sandy, 40-30 in Big Sandy. Shania Doney had 11 points for the T-Birds, while Abby Gregory scored a game-high 13 for the Pioneers. Fort Benton also bested North Star, 43-32 Monday afternoon in Rudyard to close out the 9C action before the Christmas break.

Also Monday, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars kept their perfect start to the season going by blasting 2B rival Harlem, 63-18 in Rocky Boy. After leading by just nine at the end of the first quarter, Rocky Boy outscored the Wildcats 45-9 the rest of the way.

Jude The Boy scored 12 points for Rocky Boy, while Minnie The Boy added 11. Tesche Ereaux scored six to lead Harlem.
