Hi-Line Boys Roundup: Rocky Boy, HLP roll; Box Elder falls

As the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. And for the Box Elder Bears, last Friday against Highwood was the time for their 30-game winning streak to finally come to a halt.

The Bears, who came into the weekend 4-0 on the 2014-15 season, were bombarded in the opening quarter on the road against Highwood Friday 22-8. Box Elder actually outscored Highwood the rest of the way but simply could not come back from its slow start to win the game. Highwood went on to secure the 71-58 victory over the Bears thanks in large part to the 25 points scored by Luke Davidson.

Despite the loss, Clayton Morsette Jr. had a stellar performance for the Bears with a game-high 27 points. Jake Jones added 10 and Jerrod Four Colors contributed with eight for Box Elder.

One thing about great teams is that when they face adversity, they overcome it. And one night after seeing their 30-game win streak snapped, Box Elder returned home Saturday to take on Chinook. And the Bears put a pounding on the Beeters, humbling their District 9C rival by the score of 88-50.

At the start, it looked like Chinook was going to give the Bears all they could handle. The Beeters built a 15-13 lead by the end of the first quarter thanks to 13 points in the opening stanza from Zach Schellin. Yet, when the second quarter rolled around, the Bears flipped the switch. Bodis Duran came off the bench to score 11 points and Box Elder outscored Chinook 25-6 in the quarter to take a 38-21 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Duran continued his hot streak. First, he nailed a 3-pointer, then scored a layup to help the Bears open the second half on a 8-0 run to take a 47-21 lead. By game’s end, Duran would finish with 21 points, all of them coming in the final three quarters. Box Elder used the 38-point victory to improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in district play. With the loss, Chinook fell to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the 9C.

In other action along the Hi-Line Friday, the Rocky Boy Stars traveled to Fairfield and earned an impressive 59-45 victory in District 1B play. The Stars fell behind 13-11 at the end of the first quarter and at the half found themselves tied with the Eagles at 22-22.

However, behind the play of Junior Day Child and Skyler Parisian, the Stars outscored the Eagles 21-8 in the third quarter to open up a double digit lead. From there, Rocky Boy held on for the 14-point win.

Day Child scored a game-high 17 points to pace the Stars, while Parisian contributed with 14. Rocky Boy has now won three straight games to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the 1B.

Elsewhere in the 9C Friday night, the Turner Tornadoes played host to Dodson in non-conference play and rolled to a 59-25 victory, their second of the season. The Tornadoes, who got a game-high 17 points from Brett Van Valkenberg and outscored Dodson 21-4 in the first quarter and never looked back en route to the easy win. Tristian Billmayer pitched in with 12 points and Kurt Welsch had 11. With the win Turner is 2-3 overall but remains 0-3 in the district.

Big Sandy, which also resides in the 9C, also played a non-conference game Friday as the Pioneers paid a visit to Denton-Geyser-Stanford. However, it was apparent from the beginning that DGS was superior to the Pioneers, outscoring them 32-1 in the first quarter. DGS would go on to defeat Big Sandy by a final of 73-27. Kyle Strutz was the lone bright spot in the loss with 14 points for the Pioneers, who are now 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the 9C.

Saturday, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds continued their impressive start to the season with a 60-42 home win over the North Star Knights in a 9C showdown.

The T-Birds, who remained just one of three unbeaten teams in 9C play, got an outstanding 29-point effort from Sterling White Cow to lead them to victory. Frank Runs Above also continued to play well for HLP with 14 points and Tyson Shambo added nine.

The Knights, who trailed just 28-25 at halftime, surrendered 20 points to HLP in the third quarter, and North Star simply couldn’t keep up on the offensive end. When it was all said and done, HLP scored 32 points in the second half, compared to just 17 for North Star.

Payton Peterson was the top scorer in the loss for North Star with 12 points. Willy Gilead added 10. The Knights fell to 2-4 overall with the loss and 1-3 in the 9C. HLP, on the other hand, improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 within the district.

The only other 9C team playing last Saturday was Fort Benton/Geraldine, which played host to Class B foe Conrad in a non-conference tilt. Unfortunately for Fort Benton/Geraldine, it was all about the Cowboys from start to finish. Conrad opened up a big lead early on and rode that to the 63-14 win. Fort Benton/Geraldine fell to 3-3 on the season with loss but remains 3-0 in the 9C.
