Hi-Line Boys Roundup: HLP keeps rolling; C/J-I, Chinook win two

It was a busy weekend of basketball along the Hi-Line as teams continued to get into the heart of their conference schedules, which made for some exciting action on the hardwood.

While there was a lot of basketball action this past week, no two teams spent more time on the court than the Chinook Sugarbeeters and Chester/J-I Hawks, who each played three games last week, starting with a showdown against each other in Chinook Tuesday.

The Beeters hosted the Hawks for the first time in District 9C play and thanks to a balanced effort that included four scorers in double figures, the Beeters held off C/J-I for a 53-49 win.

Lane Seymour and Cody McCracken each had a team-high 14 points to pace Chinook, while Zach Schellin and Ian McIntosh added 11 and 10, respectively. For the Hawks, Brandon Richter finished with 16, and Justin May had 14.

Thursday night, the Harlem Wildcats played in non-conference action against Class B rival Shelby. Despite being on the road Harlem grabbed an early 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter before the Coyotes took control in the second and never relinquished it in as they went on to the 56-49 win. James Chandler scored 12 points to lead Harlem in the loss. Terry Sandcrane also pitched in with 11. The Coyotes are coached by former Havre High great Tom Reynolds.

Friday night, the Wildcats played host to Glasgow in District 2B play and suffered a 49-23 loss to drop Harlem to 0-2 in conference play.

After beating C/J-I Tuesday, Chinook got a visit from Shelby in non-conference play. And despite a valiant effort, the Beeters simply didn’t have enough to beat the Coyotes, and dropped the game by a score of 55-46. Seymour had a team-high 14 points, McCracken had 11 and McIntosh had 10.

In Malta, the Rocky Boy Stars took on the Mustangs Friday night in a non-conference clash between Class B rivals. Thanks to 19 points from Cecil LaFromboise and 12 points from Levi Olsen, the Stars lead from start to finish and notched a 64-60 win.

In 9C action Friday night, the Big Sandy Pioneers hosted C/J-I. The Hawks, who were looking to rebound from their loss at Chinook did just that. C/J-I outscored Big Sandy 24-2 in the opening quarter and rode that momentum to an impressive 69-16 win.

May led all scorers in the game with 23 points, while Corey Richter contributed with 13. Troy Harmon and Brandon Theel both had 10. Kyle Strutz was the high scorer for Big Sandy with seven.

In other 9C play Friday, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds stayed unbeaten in conference play with an 84-59 win at home over Turner. The T-Birds built a 48-25 halftime lead and cruised to the blowout victory behind a stellar 26-point effort from Tyson Shambo. Sterling White Cow also added 13 and Frank Runs Above had 12. Lucas Reed poured in 23 points for Turner. Brett Van Valkenberg was also solid with 15 points.

Rounding out Friday night’s action in the 9C was the top-ranked Box Elder Bears playing host to Fort Benton-Geraldine. And in typical Box Elder fashion, the Bears ran their opponent out of the gym with a 62-29 win.

Saturday, Box Elder continued its winning ways but this time the Bears did it on the road in Big Sandy, defeating the Pioneers in dominating fashion by the score of 75-22.

Jerrod Four Colors led the way for Box Elder with a game-high 15 points. But Clayton Morsette Jr., Jake Jones and Pernell Morsette all pitched in with 11 points to help the Bears roll to victory. Laurence Alderdice was the top scorer for Big Sandy in the loss and finished with eight points.

No to be outdone, the fifth-ranked T-Birds steamrolled Fort Benton/Geraldine 62-21 in Fort Benton on Saturday to join Box Elder as the only undefeated teams left in the 9C. Shambo had another solid outing with 18 points. White Cow also added 11.

The North Star Knights had just one game this past weekend and it came on Saturday, when they welcomed in C/J-I. The Hawks, coming off a beat down of Big Sandy, notched their second straight impressive victory, knocking off the Knights 77-55.

North Star simply had no answer for May, who filled up the score sheet to the tune of 30 points to lead the Hawks to victory. Harmon was also stellar with 21. Matthew Helmbrecht had 12 points to lead the Knights, while Payton Peterson added 10.

In other 9C play Saturday, Chinook visited Turner and capped off a 2-0 week in district play with a 105-58 thrashing of the Tornadoes.

Meanwhile, in Class B action Saturday, Rocky Boy traveled to Choteau to take on the Bulldogs and were handed an 83-61 loss in 1B action. The Stars, who will host Havre Saturday, got 18 points from Junior Day Child and 10 from Shadow LaForge in the loss.
