Pony girls swim great at Great Falls Invitational

The Havre High swim teams are certainly familiar with the pool at the Swarthout Fieldhouse in Great Falls. After all, the Blue Ponies spend a lot of their time their during the season. And they made good use of their experience in the pool at this weekend’s Great Falls Invitational.

Saturday afternoon in Great Falls, the HHS girls swam to an exciting third-place finish in the Great Falls Invite. The Ponies scored 126 points and tied rival Billings Central for third. CMR and Bozeman dominated the meet, which featured nine teams, mostly from Class AA. Meanwhile, the HHS boys finished eighth with 44 points. Bozeman ran away with the boy’s meet, scoring 406 points, while CMR was second.

Saturday’s meet was definitely a triumph for the Pony girls, who have watched Billings Central dominate Class A for some time now.

Individually, the Ponies were led by the strong efforts of junior Lita Cammon. She finished third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:11.47 and came back to place third in the 100 free with a fast time of 59.25. The Ponies also got a strong finish from Aubri McCann in the 100 breaststroke. McCann swam to a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:77.56. Lieza Reighard turned in a seventh-place finish in the 50 free, while Amelia Miller placed seventh in the 200 individual medley, but her big moment came in the 500 free where she finished fourth with a time of 6:02.55.

The Ponies also used the 400 free relay to vault them up in the team standings. Havre’s top team finished second in the race with a blazing time of 4:08.01. Only Bozeman’s A team was faster than the Havre girls in the relay race.

The 400 free relay was also the Havre boys’ top finish on Saturday. The Ponies placed a solid sixth in the relay with a time of 4:17.87. Individually, Clayton Twombly’s seventh-place finish in the 200 IM was HHS’s top time in the boys meet.

The Pony swim teams will be right back in the pool in Great Falls Friday for a dual meet with the CMR Rustlers and GFH Bison. Havre will also take part in the Missoula Invitational this Saturday.
