Fundraiser for Hingham student ambassador set for April

A Hingham girl wants to travel to Europe through the People to People ambassador program this summer, however, her family needs help funding her trip.

According to the People to People website, http://www.peopletopeople.com, participants choose from various programs, travel to different countries, learn about different cultures and do volunteer work.

A dinner, raffle and silent auction benefit event for Jalissa Horinek, 17, will take place April 4 at the Hingham Community Center in Hingham to help raise the necessary funds for this trip.

The trip Jalissa wishes to go on is titled European Odyssey. This trip involves the destinations of France, Italy and Greece.

Jalissa, who is a junior at North Star High School in Rudyard, said she is looking forward to learning about different cultures.

“Seeing these different places is going to be amazing and really educational,” she said.

Jalissa also said she is a member of 4-H and is raising a pig that will be served at the fundraiser.

Teri Horinek, Jalissa’s mother, said that many local businesses, such as Torgerson's and Tilleman’s have donated items for this event. She also said that they hope to raise $10,000 for Jalissa’s travel expenses.

“There is going to be items for men, women, children — jewelry, tools. … It’s just going to be a huge variety of stuff,” Teri said.

She also said that many items will be raffled off at the event such as two half-pigs and guns.

“There’s going to be lots of door prizes,” Teri added.

Teri added that Teresa Tompkins, a leader for the Montana chapter of People to People, will be speaking at this event as well.

The doors to this event open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 per plate or $30 for a family of four and can be purchased at Norman’s Ranchwear in Havre and Hi-Way Bar and Grill in Hingham. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. Raffle tickets are available at these locations and will also be available at the event.
