Friday's Prep Basketball: HHS girls so close at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD - The Havre High girls basketball team gave the Fairfield Eagles, and their 119-game winning streak their best shot on Friday night in Fairfield. But, it was the Eagles, who scored with 3.5 seconds left in the game who had the last best shot. Fairfield won its 120th consecutive game by beating the defending Class A champion Blue Ponies 49-47 in a great game.

Havre, which saw its own eight-game winning streak snapped against the Eagles, who continue to make history with every win, played remarkable down the stretch. The Blue Ponies trailed by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, but stormed back behind 3-pointers from Morgan Mazurkiewicz, Naomi Terry and Ceyara Plante. The Ponies briefly led 45-44 late in the contest, and they tied the game at 47-47 with :53 second left. But Fairfield had the ball last and scored when it needed it most. Havre did get a chance to tie the game with free throws in the final .03 seconds, but the shots didn't fall. Still, it was a great game by both teams, and one both teams will certainly be better off for having played.

"Very, very proud of our kids tonight," Blue Pony head coach Dustin Kraske said. "They kept fighting, they kept battling back. I just couldn't be more proud of them, and we're a better team for having played in this game tonight."

The HHS boys also won a thriller Friday night. At the HHS gymnasium, the Ponies held off the Fairfield boys 54-49. Havre travels to Lewistown Saturday, while the HHS girls host Lewistown at 5 p.m. at the HHS gymnasium.
