HUD gives local tribes $4.5 million for housing

Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation is getting more than $3 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of the department’s allocations to American tribes every year.

The Fort Belknap Indian Community is receiving $1,624,233 from the department for their housing projects.

Montana tribes are receiving a collective $27 million and, nationwide, $651 million is being given to 636 Native American tribes in 34 states, according to a press release from the department.

The funds are distributed every year for tribal housing activities, the release said.

“Our nation is at its best when everyone has a fair chance to thrive,” said HUD Secretary Julián Castro. “These funds will support the innovative work Native American tribes and families are doing to build a more prosperous future. Our partnership with these local leaders today will create better housing opportunities, more robust economic development and stronger communities tomorrow.”

Chippewa Cree Business Committee chairman Ken Blatt St. Marks, who was sworn into office Friday, said this morning that he was unaware of allocation of funds to the tribe and would have to ask around for more information.

“That’s good news,” St. Marks said

The funds are used mostly to benefit low-income families on Indian reservations or in Native American communities and the amount of each grant “is based on a formula that considers local needs and housing units under management by the tribe or designated entity.”
