Purple clothes show HHS concern about suicide

People at Havre High School will be wearing purple and turquoise clothing today as a wrap-up to a week of suicide prevention programs.

Hannah Pepprock and fellow members of the school’s Key Club have put on the programs and special activities highlighting the effort to prevent suicide among young people.

A guest speaker came in from Great Falls Tuesday, said Key Club adviser John Ita, and Thursday, two rooms full of students ate pizza provided by Thrivent Financial while listening to Havre Police officers talk about tips for preventing friends from committing suicide.

Ita said it was interesting to watch students ask heartfelt questions of the officers, he said.

“It was obvious that some people had been in tough situations,” he said.

Ita said he was amazed at the public support for the program.

Thrivent provided pizza, printing companies have donated the flyers that promoted the program, and people have been emailing in support and interest.

The community support will continue today.

Employees at Triangle Communication will be conducting a dress-down day where jeans are permitted.

People have to pay to wear jeans, said Triangle spokesman Denise Kovacich, and that money will go to the Key Club for their anti-suicide effort.

Kovacich said someone sent an email to their volunteer committee telling members about the Key Club program and the good it was doing

The committee immediately decided to help out, she said.
