Obituary - Cheryl Noyes Craig

Cheryl Noyes Craig died on Feb. 16, 2015, in Lenox, Massachusetts.

The only child of Clarence and Reta Noyes, she was born on May 15, 1921, in Baker, Montana, and spent her childhood in eastern Montana, primarily in Glendive and Fairview.

She received her bachelor’s degree in 1942 and her master’s in 1947, with degrees in English from the University of Montana, where she met her husband of nearly 50 years, George D. Craig, who pre-deceased her in 1995.

She was entirely committed to two, not unrelated, careers: her family and her students. She was as caring as she was principled in both endeavors. On several levels (from junior high to college) and in several states (from Montana to Pennsylvania — mainly at St. Jude Thaddeus School in Havre and James W. Parker Middle School in Edinboro), she was respected as a consummate teacher. She dedicated herself to conveying to others the importance and power of language as a practical tool in everyday expression and as a creative medium in the arts.

A teacher and the parent of teachers, she is survived by her children, David and Randall (and their spouses Marilynn and Jane); by her grandchildren, Jennifer and Ellen (and their spouses Scott and Michael), and Graham; and by her great-grandchildren, Adam and Jonathan, and Brendan and Audrey.

Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Jude Thaddeus School, to Hospice Care in the Berkshires, or to the Alzheimer’s Association. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Feb. 26 at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.
