Hi-Line Boys Roundup: Stars, Wildcats advance to Northern B

Tournament basketball consumed the Hi-Line sports calendar this past weekend as Class C and Class B basketball teams took the court in district tournament action.

While all the Class C boys basketball teams in the area were at the District 9C tournament in Havre, the Class B teams along the Hi-Line, Rocky Boy of the District 1B and Harlem of the District 2B, were off in separate tournaments in Conrad and Wolf Point, respectively.

Both teams opened their postseason and efforts to qualify for the Northern 2B divisional tournament in Malta Thursday but did so in dramatically different fashion. Rocky Boy, which took on Shelby in the 1B tournament in Conrad fell 68-58, while Harlem rolled to a 66-46 victory over Plentywood in Wolf Point.

The Stars fell behind early in their contest against the Coyotes but did manage to tie the score at 28-28 going into the half. Yet, Shelby outscored Rocky Boy 14-4 in the third quarter and then held on in the fourth for the win. Cecil LaFromboise had 13 points in the loss for the Stars, while Junior Day Child had 12.

The Wildcats, on the other hand, got out of the gates quickly in their opening round game against Plentywood, leading 14-7 after the first quarter and 38-11 at the half en route to the easy 20-point triumph. Tristian Gone led the way for Harlem with a team-high 16 points. Dutch Hegelson added 13.

After knocking off Plentywood Thursday, the Wildcats advanced into the semifinals of the 2B, where they would face off against the Malta Mustangs. And right from the get go, it was close between the two teams. The Wildcats trailed at the end of the first quarter but rallied and by halftime they held a slim 20-19 edge over the Mustangs.

However, Malta outscored the Wildcats 19-14 over the final 16 minutes of play and wound up notching a 39-35 victory over Harlem. Kwhana Little had 10 to pace the Wildcats, Marcus Henry also added nine.

Following their loss to Malta, the Wildcats needed to turn around and get a win over Wolf Point Saturday morning into to secure the top-four finish required to advance to the Northern B divisional tournament. And even though it wasn't easy, the Wildcats scored the much-needed 49-47 win to ensure they will play at least two more games of basketball this season.

Over in the 1B, Rocky Boy found itself in the exact same situation after dropping their opening-round game to Shelby. The Stars, who went toe-to-toe with Conrad in loser-out action, knew their season was on the line and still they were not able to jump out in front of the Cowboys, who led 30-24 at halftime. However, Rocky Boy would not be denied and tied the score up after three quarters, then racked up 25 points in the final stanza to wrap up the win and their berth at the Northern B.

Saturday night, the Stars took on Shelby in a rematch of Thursday's game in the consolation and were once again defeated by the Coyotes 60-46. Day Child led the Stars with 12 and LaFromboise also contributed with 10.
