Sunnyside shows its school spirit

Sunnyside wraps up 'I Love to Read Month,' honors Dr. Seuss's birthday

The students and staff at Sunnyside Intermediate School wrapped up "I Love to Read Month" and honored Dr. Seuss's birthday Monday by holding a door decorating contest.

The theme of the contest was Dr. Seuss books and movies, and was titled the Student Council's Community Connections Door Decorating Contest.

Many doors on the campus featured designs related to Seuss's books or movies, such as "Oh the Places You'll Go" and "If I Ran a Circus."

As long as the doors followed the Dr. Seuss theme, judging criteria was left open for interpretation.

The fifth-grade classroom of room 6, taught by Lesley Gardner, won the competition. The theme they chose was, "Oh the Places You'll Go" and their door featured three-dimensional hot air balloons and photos of the children.

The class won a Havre Area Chamber of Commerce gift certificate.

Gardner said she was the one who came up with the idea for the door.

"I was just thinking of all the places that they have potential to go," she said.

Sophie Kirkpatrick, a student in Gardner's class, said that she liked the 3D balloon aspect of her classroom's door.

"We got, like, six pieces of paper and we cut them out to look like hot air balloons, and then we took two and we folded them and then we glued them all together and put the string in the middle," she said.

Collin Miller, another student in Gardner's class was happy his class won.

"Even if we didn't win, I still liked making it," he said.

Nicole Cornelius, the coordinator of the contest and teacher at Sunnyside, said that this contest brought awareness to the importance of reading.

"It's usually one of the first books that most children learn how to read - we love reading it as adults," she said. "It's nice that it pulls it all together with encouraging kids to read and enjoy reading all the way around."
