US Bank Park in for a facelift from Havre Trails

US Bank Park will be spruced up because of the work of Havre Trials.

The nonprofit organization that is trying to build up Havre's system of walking and bike trails will sign an agreement with the city of Havre that will give Havre Trails the authority to secure grants to get the work done.

Havre Trails will apply this week for a $20,000 grant from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Havre Trails hopes to refurbish the walkways on the 20-acre park, which is adjacent to Montana State University-Northern.

Many people don't know about US Bank Park beyond what they can see from the street, Havre Trails President Lindsey Bennett told city council Monday night.

But the pathways within the park's limits offer a great view of the city and the Bear Paw Mountains, she said.

The trails have been in poor shape recently, she said. The grant will help get them back in shape.

There are plenty of opportunities for bird-watching at the park, she said. Signs will be installed to inform people of the birds that inhabit the area.

Benches and picnic tables will be installed to make the park more comfortable for visitors, she said.

A kiosk will be built with information on the park, park etiquette and other information, they said.

She predicted the park would be well used because of its proximity to the university.

She said she hoped biology professors would use the park to show students the bird species in the area.

Bennett said this would be the first phase of the group's effort to improve trails in the city.
