Letter to the Editor: Change rules on milk expiration date

Editor:

I am writing this letter after finding out that the date on a gallon of milk is not an expiration date, while following the recent attempt at legislation.

First, my family and friends that I have talked to have all thought the date on the container was a date that told us how long the milk was good. To my surprise, I found out that it is a date for which the seller could not sell the milk any longer and had to destroy it.

To make things worse, it was testified that the milk was good for another seven to 10 days, depending on which processor it came from. To destroy a perfectly good item in these days seems to be such a shame especially as families struggle to make ends meet.

Second, why do Montana families pay subsequently more a gallon then neighboring states?

Then to make it worse and more unbelievable, the Montana Department of Livestock forbids the manufacturers of milk to let the purchaser know what the reasonable shelf life will be.

I tried to speak in front of the committee, but the room was too crowded, and I did not have the opportunity.

I found it quite unbelievable that the department was making this rule to protect themselves and not the consumer, as now I know there is no useful information for me and my family.

After doing some research on the Board of Livestock, I found that they are not only in debt; they seem to be quite dysfunctional. First, I found a member that had committed a felony a few years ago on the board and lacked the integrity to resign; shame on him.

Second, shame on the chairman for not asking for his resignation and even worse yet, shame on our governor for allowing him to remain on the board!  But what hurt me the most is the fact that I have voted Democrat for my whole life because I always thought they were for the consumer and family. Ellie Hill, shame on you especially as you promote for the poor and homeless. With my own eyes, I saw all Democrats cave into big labor and the unions versus the family. What an insult to what they say they stand for.
