Montana House endorses tax credit for private school tuition

Reps. Stephanie Hess, R-Havre, Mike Lang, R-Malta, and Bruce Meyers, R-Box Elder, voted for the tax credit. Rep. Roy Hollandsworth, R-Brady voted no.

HELENA (AP) — Montana representatives have given initial approval to a Republican proposal to give tax credits for private school tuition.

The House voted 53-47 to pass House Bill 433 on second reading. It was forwarded to the House Appropriations Committee.

The measure would give up to $1,000 in non-refundable tax credits to those who pay tuition for elementary or secondary school.

From 2016-2018, the credits would be limited to tuition increases, which would restrict the benefits primarily to families who move their children from public to private schools.

Opponents say the measure would violate the Montana Constitution by indirectly giving public dollars to sectarian institutions. Proponents argue the credits go to individual taxpayers.

A similar proposal died in the 2013 Legislature.
