Fair Board recommends 90-day manager position at special meeting

The Great Northern Fair Board held a special meeting Tuesday. Last week, the board reviewed three bids that were submitted for the fairgrounds manager position. Mike Sharp’s bid was the one the board accepted.

Gus Sharp, a board member, and Mike’s father, said the meeting was held in regards to the new fairgrounds manager position.

“They were just discussing about what they were doing as far as fair manager contracts,” he said. “They’ve got a committee that’s working on what and if they will update the job description for the fair manager contract.”

Sharp said that the board proposed that Mike Sharp go on a 90-day contract. This contract still needs to be approved by the Hill County Commissioners.

“They just want to make sure that they have someone there to take care of things at the fair board and to work with Tim before he leaves,” he said.

Sharp added that he will step down from the board once his son’s position is finalized.

“I have not been able to be involved in any of the discussions,” he said. “I have had to recuse myself from every vote, and if he is approved for whether it be the contract, or the 90-day then I have to turn in my resignation because of the nepotism rules.”

Bert Corcoran, chairman of the board, said the board discussed the 90-day proposal to try to get a smooth turnover as fast as possible due to Tim Solomon’s position expiring at the end of the month.

“We somehow have to get somebody on board,” he said. “The idea is that 90 days will give the board and him a chance to see what they can work out there and then when they re-advertise for the contract — the board still wants to pursue a contract.”

Solomon resigned from his position as fairgrounds manager in January after nearly 12 years. His resignation will go into effect March 31.
