Pony thinclads off and running

There is definitely a big difference between a sprint and a marathon. With a marathon, you need to pace yourself and it’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish.

And when it comes to the 2015 season, the Havre High track teams are treating it like a marathon, not a sprint.

And even though that approach is one that possibly cost both the Havre boys and girls some points this past Saturday in the Central Montana Invitational in Lewistown, in which the boys team finished third with 64 points and the girls finished sixth with 29 points, the Blue Ponies are worried about where they finish in the last meet of the season, not the first one.

Because it was the first meet of the season and head coach John Ita’s main focus was simply to get his team some competition, while getting through the meet healthy, most athletes didn’t compete in many events but even so it was a positive start according to Ita.

“I think that we accomplished everything that we set out to,” Ita said. “The thing about these kids is that if you put them in too many events, they will compete so hard that they might get injured. There is a big difference between being sore and injured, and we have some kids that are sore, but we have no one that is injured.”

The HHS boys team was led by top performer Michael Loftus, who not only won the 200-meter dash but also finished second in the 100. In addition to Loftus, senior Gunnar Aageson also had a stellar opening to the season with a first-place finish in the pole vault.

“Gunnar did very well in the pole vault, especially with the weather conditions — you had sustained winds of 30 mph and some gusts up to 50,” Ita said. “Michael also ran really well. He got the season off to a great start so it was good to see that.”

Other Pony boys that managed to place were Nick Keller, who was second in the high jump, Marc Woronik, who came in fifth in the 100, Luke Karnuaskas, who was sixth in the 100 and Jacob Irvin was also sixth in the 110 hurdles. Havre also won both the 400 and 1600 relays. The 1600 team was made up of Nate Rismon, Loftus, Ivar Aageson and Jacob LabRie, while the 400-relay team consisted of Rismon, Loftus, LaBrie and Richard Belcourt.

“I think we set a PR for the 1,600 relay, we had a team we never had last year,” Ita said. “Rismon ran the first leg of the 1,600 in 53 seconds, which is an amazing time. When he ran, it was almost like there was no wind.”

In the team competition, the 64 points of the Havre boys trailed only first-place Lewistown, which had 150.5 points and White Sulphur Springs, which finished with 96.5.

The Havre girls did manage to score 29 points but the girls competition was dominated by the Livingston Rangers, who scored a total of 134 points to take home first place. Lewistown was second with 84 and Hobson was third with 62.

Kaylee Nystrom was the top performer for the girls team as she notched a first-place finish in the pole vault. Laine Shettel of Havre finished sixth. Other girls that placed for the Ponies were Rachel David, who finished fourth in the 800 and Logan Huebsch, who finished fourth in the 100 hurdles.

“I was really impressed with the way our girls, particularly our freshmen girls, came in and competed,” Ita said. “A lot of kids that do well in this sport are seniors and for freshmen to come in and compete the way they did was really good to see.”

The Ponies will have a week off before they take part in their next meet, which will be April 8 in Havre at the annual Cal Wearly Invitational, which will be held at the Havre Middle School track.
