Northern honors students with 2015 Excellence awards

The Student Excellence Award is the highest honor an Montana State University-Northern student can receive.  The students who meet the demanding requirements have caught the attention of their peers and leaders through their hard work and determination. This award is a small token of MSU-Northern's appreciation for their commitment to excellence. 

Brooke Frazier has worked in the Vande Bogart Library throughout her entire college career. She is known for her tenacity and willingness to advocate for other students who need assistance. Frazier will be graduating in the spring of 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and plans on becoming a pharmacist in Montana for the Indian Health Service.

  Ethan Hinebauch attended Havre High and will be graduating in May with a degree in agricultural operations technology. Hinebauch is a four-time All-American wrestler and holds the records for number of pins and wins for any Northern wrestler. He finished fifth in the NAIA Championship this year. He has served as the team captain for three years and is a four-year PAS club member. After graduation Hinebauch plans to farm alongside his parents, brother and sister-in-law.

  Kayla Lasalle attended Havre High School and will be graduating in May with a degree in business administration.  While at Northern LaSalle, has been highly involved with the student organization, ENACTUS. She is also a member of the Montana Stockgrower's Club and has been on the dean's list for five semesters.

  Nick Luoma will be graduating in May with a degree in secondary health and physical education. Luoma plans to finish his degree by student teaching in Belt where he hopes to assist with coaching football and basketball for Belt High School. He is excited to inspire young adults to work hard and succeed in the world of athletics and in their personal and mental health and well-being. 

Linda Osterman started her education in the fall semester of 2005 and graduated in December 2014 with degrees in business administration and community leadership. Osterman spends time as a Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteer.

Michael Schulteis has served as a Northern Student Ambassador and with New Student Orientation. He has also spent significant time filming for the Northern football team, is a three-year member of Student Senate - two years in the role of Intramural and Recreation Coordinator - and has worked for Residence Life as a resident assistant. Schulteis has been on the dean's list four semesters. He will be receiving a degree in automotive and diesel technology this May. His short term goal is to obtain a position within the diesel industry that will allow him to travel, maintain a good work-life balance, and has great pay and benefits.

Elaine Serwacki received her Associate of Arts degree with high honors in 2013 from Bitterroot College of the University of Montana before pursuing her business administration degree from Northern as a full time distance learner.  She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and National Honor Society as well as a dean's list honoree every year she has attended school. Serwacki has been very involved volunteering with: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Soroptimist International of Hamilton, and Boy Scouts. She will graduate in December 2015 and plans to take a break from school before working toward her master's degree. 

Joe Vernon has produced great change in the area of sustainability for Northern, ultimately helping Northern receive the Environmental Hero Award from Recycle HiLine. Vernon was awarded the Volunteer of the Game from Montana Campus Compact and the Montana Governor's Office of Community Service.  Vernon is the vice president for Skills USA. He will graduate in May 2016 with two degrees in diesel technology, the equipment management option and field maintenance option. Vernon wants to work for an international company such as Wartsila or GE Transportation providing technical assistance or fleet maintenance management support.

Jordanna Weimer has been involved in the Nursing Club, Student Senate, Compact Corp, Americorps, and World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms-Costa Rica. Weimer will graduate this May with a degree in nursing. She looks forward to becoming an emergency medical technician and eventually a nurse-paramedic where she hopes to work as a flight nurse in the summers. She wants to continue her work as a wildland firefighter.

Laura Zentmire has been dedicated to her academics towards securing her nursing degree. Once she passes the NCLEX exam, a test in nursing skills, in June, and after becoming a registered nurse, she looks forward to her new career. She enjoys working with geriatrics and wants to get her BSN degree through MSU-Northern's on-line program. Zentmire has participated in Compact Corp-AmeriCorp and the Level II Nursing Club.                                                                        This year Northern has added a Student Excellence Award for the graduate level. This year's graduate level award goes to LaVon Myers.

Myers was a member of Northern's men's basketball team and was appointed team captain as he helped lead the Lights to two NAIA National Tournament appearances, two conference championships and two Frontier Conference Tournament championships.  Meyers plans to graduate with his Masters of Science in Education, Instruction and Learning in the spring of 2016.  After graduation, he plans to move back to the Los Angeles area and begin teaching and coaching at an inner-city high school. He wants to help the youth from the area where he grew up and build pride and confidence in his students.  Myers wants to motivate teens to finish high school and go to college. He also wants to continue his Neighborhood Basketball Training organization that he started in Havre. Meyers's ultimate goal is to be a positive role model and give the children in the inner-cities the encouragement and inner drive it takes to make it out of the ghetto.
