Northern lands star heavyweight wrestler

Montana State University-Northern head wrestling coach Tyson Thivierge has been hot on the recruiting trail of late. And this week, Thivierge landed a big one.

On Tuesday afternoon, Thivierge announced the signing of North Idaho College heavyweight Taylor Kornoely to an NAIA national letter of intent. Kornoely is the 2015 NJCAA national champion at heavyweight, as he captured the national title for the Cardinals earlier this month.

Originally from Lowell, Michigan, Kornoely is a two-time NJCAA All-American after he finished sixth as a freshman in 2014.

"To me, this is huge for many reasons," Thivierge said. "Number one, in years past, we have been thin in the upper weights and the thing that excited Taylor most was the opportunity to work out with Toby (Cheff) and Garrett (DeMers). The other reason this is big for the program is we are building for next season and beyond. Taylor has not redshirted yet and based off how the remainder of the recruiting season goes, we have just locked down a big-time recruit that can produce for years to come. We can either redshirt him, or he could possibly be another option for the NAIA National Tournament next season. We aren't looking ahead and we know we have a lot of work to do, but he will help tremendously in all aspects. Taylor is extremely athletic and has that national tournament experience."

Kornoely joins a growing list of outstanding recruits in Northern's 2015 class. The class also includes four-time Class B-C state champion Matt Weber of Forsyth, as well as recent additions Quintel Fuchs of Billings Senior and Austin Blaede of Colstrip.
