Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels

Laurel — A Montana Actors’ Theatre play opens, Easter Egg hunts are taking place all over town, special religious services are planned along with church social gatherings and many others events are being held this weekend to celebrate this special season. To all those who work to put on celebrations of the season, we thank you. That is what makes Havre special.

Dart — The Montana House this week slammed the brakes on special funding for schools, correctional facilities and other groups that depend on state funding, in a sudden and unexpected move. The House claims that Gov. Steve Bullock has overspent this allocations and the spending freeze is necessary. This will cause serious problems for the Havre school district and many others around the state. They are not getting the money they counted on. There are no signs the state is going broke, and it seems to us the House action is more drama than good government. They are not punishing the governor; they are taking out their frustration on students and state workers.

Laurel — The Montana State Senate Finance and Claims Committee and the governor have come to a deal on to handle the problem. Bullock won some and lost some. The Senate Republicans got some of what they wanted. Neither the governor nor the Republican are fully pleased, but Montana taxpayers are happy. Working together and compromising, even if it means having to gag a little.
