Assistant superintendent leaving Havre

Leland Stocker, the assistant superintendent for Havre Public Schools, will soon be superintendent of Belgrade Public Schools.

Stocker will finish out the rest of the school year before he takes his position July 1. This wraps up his three years of work with Havre schools and his second as assistant superintendent.

“We’re going to miss him,” said Andy Carlson, superintendent of Havre Public Schools. “He’s done a very nice job as assistant superintendent. I’m excited for his opportunity in Belgrade. He deserves that, and we wish him the best.”

Stocker said the first year he was with Havre, he was the director of education before moving into his current position.

“This has been a tremendous experience having served the last three years in Havre,” he said. “I think some of the things I’ve learned I’ll be able to apply in Belgrade.”

He said the best part of his job here was working with the people of Havre.

“The support is unmatched,” he said. “I’m hoping to try and replicate that in (Belgrade). The tremendous warmth and support of the community members here, from the time that we came to interview, from throughout our stay, has been a truly, incredibly warm and caring experience.”

Stocker has three children in the school system now, one eighth-grader, a freshman and a junior. He said they have set their lives up in Havre and all of them, himself included, will miss the area, but they are looking forward to the move, which will bring them closer to his other two children, who are attending college in Bozeman and Wyoming.

Carlson said he needs to visit with the Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees before they put out the call for someone to replace Stocker.

“We’ll advertise this position the same way we advertise all our positions in the state,” Carlson said. “We’re not going to sacrifice the district to get somebody in place.
