Great performances on a great day

Havre boys, Malta girls win annual Cal Wearley titles

One thing that is always unpredictable about the Cal Wearley Track meet, which is held at the Havre Middle School track, is the weather. But in the 2015 version of the annual meet, the weather was mild and that meant some good performances and good times all around.

With more than 30 schools and more than 500 athletes in attendance, the meet, held Wednesday in Havre, provided plenty of competition for everyone participating, but at the end of the day it was the Havre High boys that took home the boys title with 83 points, barely edging out second-place Cut Bank by three as the Wolves finished with 80. On the girls side, it was Malta that walked away with the team title after posting 99.5 points. Chinook finished a solid second with 64 points, while Fort Benton was third with 52 and Havre fourth with 44.

"It was just great for our kids to get out and set some marks that they can work on as the season goes on," North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. "I think there were some positive things and some things that we need to work on, but the kids got to face some great competition and it was a really nice day, so I thought it went well."

The Blue Pony boys ran their way to the team title as Nate Rismon made his imprint on the meet by winning the 200-meter dash as well as the 400 in addition to being part of the 400 and 1,600 relay teams that took home first place in their respective events.

Those points from Rismon, as well as points earned in the sprints from Michael Loftus, Gunnar Aageson and Ivar Aageson were a big reason why the Ponies were able to come away with the victory.

While no other local team fared better than eighth, there were some impressive performances like the one put together by Cody McCracken, who won the 300 hurdles for the Chinook Sugarbeeters. Kyler Johnson also had a good day for the Beeters, placing second in the 1,600 and fourth in the 3,200. Travis Roth also added a fourth-place finish in the 800, while Chinook finished fifth in the 1,600 relay.

"I thought it was a good day," Chinook head coach Paula Molyneaux said. "It was nice to get on a track, this was our first one of the year. We had some real bright spots. Cody was first in the 300 hurdles, so our older kids really came through today."

The other Hi-Line athletes who placed on the boys side were Brett Van Valkenburg of Turner, who was fifth in the 400, as well as Cory Kelly of Chester/J-I, who ended up third in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles. Kyle Strutz finished sixth in the 200, and Geno Menard was fourth in the 300 hurdles for Big Sandy, while Shane Ketchum of Box Elder finished sixth in the 800, third in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200 to pace the Bears. Robert Garidpee finished fourth in the shot put for Box Elder.

In the girls competition, Malta ran away with things but the Beeters ended up finishing a respectable second and did so thanks in large part to the contribution of Britney Nelson, who won the discus and shot put events, while also finishing fourth in the javelin.

"Britney had a really good day," Moylneaux said. "She is our returning state champion shot putter, she won the shot today and the discus."

The Beeters also got outstanding performances from Kailey Kleinjan, who finished first in the 100 and second in the 200, as well as Hannah Weber, who was third in both the 1,600 and 3,200, and Abigail Ellison, who finished second in the triple jump.

"You know we had (Kailey) come out and win the 100 and finished second in the 200," Molyneaux said. "Hannah placed in the distance races and (Abi)also did well so that was good to see. I thought it was good to start the year cause sometimes you never know what to expect in the first meet."

Tylynn Rettig had a strong day for the host North Star Knights as she captured first place in the pole vault, while adding a third-place finish in the 200 and a fifth-place finish in the triple jump. For Turner, the bright spots were Ella Billmayer, who was second in the 1,600, second in the 3,200 and fifth in the 800, Jaye Anderson, who was sixth in the 200, and Rennay Watkins, who was fifth in the high jump. Maddy Reichelt scored points for Big Sandy by notching a sixth-place finish in the 3,200.

Most of the area schools will be right back at the HMS Track Saturday for the Havre Lions Invitational.
