Dominique Preputin - volunteer on ice

Dominique Preputen is Monday's pick for Volunteer of the Week, a five-day look at five members of the community who have done more than their share to help better Havre and the Hi-Line.

Preputin is the owner of Western Drug Pharmacy and president of the Havre Youth Hockey Association. This will be her sixth year working with the association and her fifth year as its president.

She said Saturday that she spends about two hours a week working with the association. When it's during the regular season, that number can rise and during the off-season lower.

"I make sure all the policies and procedure are up to date," Preputin said. "... Getting volunteers up here to work admissions and concessions, keeping everything organized, clean and in preparation for our games, keeping everybody happy."

She said that this last season was busier now that they have the Glacier Nationals.

Preputin was asked to be president of the association because they had not had one in a few years, she said.

"They were just looking for someone who has leadership capabilities," Preputin said. "It was kind of floundering."

At the time she took over, the procedures had not been reviewed for some time, the bylaws had not been updated for years.

"It was kind of just cleaning things up and getting everything back to where it was - kind of running it like a business and getting everything organized again," she said.

Much of her work also deals with construction projects at the Havre Ice Dome.

She said that the main reason she works with the association is for her son.

"That's kind of why I put so much into it as I do; it's for my son," she said. "This is his thing, and I'm trying to make sure it's still here for him. He's sort of one of those kids where if you don't keep him busy, he'll get into trouble, so this is something he's very interested in. It keeps his attention."

She said that she is glad that other children of Havre and the Hi-Line can benefit from the association.

"I think it's a great opportunity for the kids," Preputin said, adding that youth hockey has taught her son how to be a team member and work with others. "I really don't do it for myself; I do it for the kids."
