Pony Power on the Track

HHS track teams thrive at windy Lions Havre Invite

The Havre High track teams rarely get a chance to compete in front of their hometown fans, so when the opportunity arises, the Blue Ponies do their best to take advantage of it. And despite facing some difficult weather conditions, that is exactly what both teams did Saturday at the Havre Invitational.

Thanks to another stellar performance in the relays and sprints, the HHS boys took home first-place in the Lions Havre Invitational Saturday at the Havre Middle School track to get the Pony boys their second win at a meet this week. Havre also won the Cal Wearley Invitational back on Wednesday. Havre finished ahead of its competitors with 80 points, while the Cut Bank boys were second with 75. Conrad finished third with 64.

On the girls side of things, Havre did not come out on top, that distinction belonged to the Chinook Sugarbeeters, who scored 98 points to edge out the Ponies, who finished second with 91.5. Malta ended up third with 84 points.

"Every time we are having a meet I am seeing good things," HHS head coach John Ita said. "We are really impressed with all our relays right now. So we are really pleased with that. We also saw some good things from our throwers. All three of our throwing girls placed in the javelin and we had some young throwers do well on the boys team.

"It was a home meet, so you would like to see us compete the way we did," he added. "You want to compete hard in front of home crowd and we really competed well."

The victory from the boys team was once again paced by dominance in the sprints and relays. Michael Loftus of Havre took home first place in the 100-meter dash and finished sixth in the 200, while Nate Rismon captured the 200.

Rismon and Loftus also helped pace the 400 and 1,600 relays, while Jacob LaBrie also ran both. Ivar Aageson ran the 1,600 relay and Gunnar Aageson was the last member of the 400 relay team.

"It feels good," Rismon said after winning the 200. "It's just nice to race against some other people and to get to compete. The (wind) was terrible. It's hard running into it but it feels good when it's on your back and helps you at the end."

When asked what made the relay teams so successful so far this season, Rismon responded, "It's our handoffs. We have been working on them in practice every day and have gotten better at them which had helped get our time down."

Gunnar Aageson, one of the few seniors on the Havre track team, wanted to make his mark in his last Havre Invite and did just that taking home the first-place prize in the pole vault. He beat out his brother Ivar Aageson, who finished second and Rismon, who was third.

"We don't have many home meets," Gunnar Aageson said. "So I didn't want to just waste away one of my last home meets. This is pretty much the only home one that we have so I wanted to make sure I did my best."

Havre did well in other field events as Nick Keller got third in the high jump, while Luke Karnauskas got sixth. Richard Belcourt also added a fourth-place finish in the long jump and Brock Ross was fifth in the 3,200 to round out the scoring for the Havre boys.

The effort by the Havre girls team was one that was spread across a number of events but one HHS girl in particular who had a solid day was Rachel David, who finished second in the 400 and third in the 800, while also helping the 1,600 relay team to a first-place showing.

"Rachel just really competes hard," Ita said. "She ran really well and to do that in that wind was really impressive to see."

Another Pony girl who impressed was freshman Logan Huebsch, who played a key role for the Ponies by placing in three different events. Huebsch won the 300 hurdles, while finishing second in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the long jump.

Yet, the Ponies also got contributions from Corissa White, who was fourth in the 100 and sixth in the 100 hurdles, Megan Erickson, who finished fourth in the 800 and Ireland Coyne, who finished third in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.

"It was exciting to see some Havre girls do well in the hurdles," Ita said. "We are starting to see more kids contributing in other events and that's exciting to see"

Havre also got big contributions in the throwing events in the girls competition as Carleigh Rennick finished third in the javelin and fifth in the shot put. Kristen Nash was also impressive with a fourth-place finish in the shot put and a sixth-place showing in the discus, and Jordan Keith also did well finishing third in the discus, fifth in the javelin and sixth in the shot put.

The Havre High track teams will be back in action Tuesday, when they will host Havre Triangular at the Havre Middle School track. The action will start at 3 p.m.
