John Chapman - committed to helping the poor

Pastor John Chapman is Wednesday's Volunteer of the Week in a five-day look at five members of the Havre community who have done more than their share to help better Havre and the Hi-Line.

Pastor John Chapman of the First Baptist Church, has been volunteering at the Salvation Army - Havre Service Center for about eight years.

Chapman is part of the Havre Ministerial Association. When the Salvation Army Church closed down in 2005, the ministry stayed open.

"I came as the pastor at-large to be able to take the prayer requests that they would get and pass them out to all the other pastors so we could all pray for them," Chapman said. "I didn't want the ministry to suffer, so I took over their position."

Chapman also said the Salvation Army Havre Service Center has a prayer box.

"I take those prayer requests and send them out to all the pastors, so we are able to either answer the counseling call, visit or just pray for them," he said.

Chapman added that his favorite part about being involved with the Salvation Army is being able to help people out and knowing that he made a difference.

Trina Crawford, director of the Salvation Army Havre Service Center, said she is grateful for Chapman's years of volunteering.

"He comes in and anytime he sees where we need any kind of help, it doesn't matter what it is - he is willing to pitch in and do whatever he needs to do," she said. "If it wasn't for him being able to be that flexible, I don't know where I would be."

Crawford added that Chapman is somebody she can depend on.

"If I need something, I know I can call him," she said. "(His) volunteering this long has been a tremendous help to the Salvation Army."
