Pony thinclads run in Belgrade

After competing on their home track the previous three meets, the Havre High track teams hit the road past Saturday for the Gallatin Valley Invitational and found some challenging competition awaiting them.

The Havre boys, which had won their last three meets, had a more difficult time scoring points at a meet filled with Class A schools and wound up finishing seventh with 29.5 points. Manhattan won the meet with 102 points. Belgrade was second with 87 and Dillon third with 74.

On the girls side of the things, the Blue Ponies had some struggles against the higher level of competition and managed to score just three points, which put them in 15th place. Manhattan made it a clean sweep by taking the girls title as well as the boys with 97 points. Dillon finished second with 96 and Laurel came in third with 68.

The Pony boys once again got strong performances by both their relay teams as the boys took third in the 400-meter relay with a time of 45.53 and fourth in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:42.21. Nate Rismon, who runs on both relay teams also had a strong day, placing third in the 400 and fourth in the 200. Rismon ran a 53.11 in the 400 and a 23.38 in the 200.

“I was really happy with our boys relay teams,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “We knew we were going to have to be near perfect on our relays to get in the top three or four and we almost were. We had a couple issues with the exchange so that could even cut a couple seconds off our time.”

Michael Loftus was another Havre sprinter who put together a good performance in Belgrade, running a 23.81 to finish sixth in the 200 and an 11.49 to also finish sixth in the 100. Like Rismon, Loftus also ran both relays.

Gunnar Aageson was another Pony boy who placed in Belgrade as he posted a height of 12-00 in the pole vault to get third. Ivar Aageson also placed sixth in the pole vault for the HHS boys with a height of 11-06. Both Aageson brothers contributed in the relays as well as Gunnar Aageson ran in the 400 relay and Ivar Aageson ran in the 1,600 relay. The other relay team member was Jacob LaBrie, who ran in both events.

The remaining Havre boy that notched points for the Ponies in Belgrade was Nick Keller, who finished fifth in the high jump with a jump of 5-08.

“I was pleased with how the boys did,” Ita said. “I thought that the boys that were supposed to go down and get points scored points for us. I thought we competed well.”

The Havre girls placed in just two events at the meet and the only individual to place for HHS in the girls competition was Megan Erickson, who finished fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:40.73. Erickson was also part of the 1,600 relay team that earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 4:40.8. Logan Huebsch, Addison Kinsella and Naomi Terry joined Erickson on the long relay team.

“Megan had a really nice day,” Ita said. “We put her in the mile again at the last minute and she got seventh place with a really good time. She also ran well in the 800 and got points so she had a good day.

“I think of our freshmen girls had a tough time with the competition,” he added. “It was a good learning experience for the. But I think it hurt their egos a little bit. But, they competed well.”

The Havre High track teams will be back in action on Tuesday in Malta. The meet will begin at 3 p.m. Then, next Saturday Havre will be in Whitefish to compete. The action will get underway at 9:30 a.m.
