HHS track teams face tough ARM field

The Havre High track teams may not have scored a ton of points at the Whitefish ARM Invitational Saturday, but regardless of that fact, the Blue Ponies had some impressive individual performances against a field full of high-quality teams and athletes.

The Pony boys have fielded a competitive team all season long and that was the case Saturday as well, but due to having a team that was less than 100 percent, the HHS boys managed just 20 points and took home a ninth-place finish. Glacier High School of Kalispell took home the top spot with 162.5 points. Bigfork finished second with 56 and Whitefish was third with 52.

Havre girls ended up placing a few individuals, a number of others missed narrowly missed out on placing, so even though the girls scored only eight points and finished 10th, there were a number of positives to take away. First place went to the Glacier girls, who scored 125 points. Plains was second with 94 and Bigfork third with 79.

"I thought that the day went really well," HHS head coach John Ita said. "We had a few of our boys place and a few of our girls place, we had a number of others that were really close, but every single kid had a (personal record) in at least one event. The kids just competed really well. There was some great competition and we got to put kids in events where they really got challenged. But from a track perspective, I couldn't be happier with the way the kids competed."

While a number of individuals had strong days for Havre, no one put together a better performance than Nate Rismon, who led the boys team by notching a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.5 and a second-place showing in the 400 with a time of 51.18.

Rismon was also part of the HHS boys 400 and 1,600 relay teams that finished sixth and fourth respectively. Joining Rismon on the 400 relay team was Gunnar Aageson, Jacob LaBrie and Luke Karnauskas. Rismon, LaBrie and Karnauskas also ran on the 1,600 relay, joined by Ivar Aageson.

"Nate just had a really outstanding day," Ita said. "He ran two very, very good races in both the 200 and the 400. It was just really special to watch. Both our relay teams also ran really well and were very competitive."

The only member of the Havre boys team that was able to place as an individual was Gunnar Aageson, who ended up finishing sixth in the pole vault with a height of 11-6.

The girls team did not have as many individual placers as the boys team but did get two in the 300 hurdles as Logan Huebsch took home fourth in the event with a time of 49.87, while Naomi Terry was fifth with a time of 50.55.

Yet, the Pony girls also had some near misses as Megan Erickson was close to placing in the 1,600 and 800, while Rachel David also came close in the 400 and 800. However, both David and Erickson were part of the Pony girls 1,600 relay team that finished sixth. They were joined by Terry and Kaylee Nystrom. The 400 relay team also placed sixth and consisted of Terry, Huebsch, Nystrom and Corissa White.

"I thought our girls did very well," Ita said. "Logan and Naomi both performed very well. Our relays did well and I thought both Rachel and Megan ran well. They came very close to placing but just came up a little short."

Up next is another busy week for Havre starting Tuesday as the athletes who qualified will travel to Glasgow for the annual Top 10 meet that will begin at 3 p.m. Havre will also compete in Great Falls Thursday at 3:45 p.m., before returning home Saturday for a triangular against Malta and Lewistown. That will start at 11 a.m., at the Havre Middle School track.
