Postal carriers food drive is Saturday

The Havre Food Bank will be getting a healthy donation of food for its shelves Saturday thanks to the generosity of Havre residents and the hard work of area postal carriers.

People are asked to leave their donations of nonperishable food in bags at their mailboxes Saturday morning.

Carriers will collect food and deliver it to the Havre Food Bank.

Anxiously awaiting the food will be Lorna Bierga, the director of the food bank.

She said this food drive is important because it tides them over for the summer, when donations are a little bit low and there is higher-than-usual need because children are off school and home during the day.

Any kind of food is welcome, she said, but there is a special need for peanut butter, canned fruit and canned vegetables.

Peanut butter is nutritious and popular with the children, she said,

The postal carriers drive is the second largest of the year, she said, behind only the Everybody Loves Firefighters drive in the fall.
