20 Ponies reach Class A state track meet

Havre boys finish third, girls fourth at Central A track meet

The Havre High track teams were optimistic heading into the Central A divisional meet in Belgrade this past weekend. And while neither team came away with a trophy, both put together solid performances and qualified a good number of athletes for the Class A state meet this weekend in Laurel.

The Belgrade boys were by far the most dominant team at the meet and won the boys competition going away with 214.3 points. Lewistown finished second with 155.3 points and Havre finished third with 72.3.

The girls title, on the other hand, was more hotly contested and when it was all said and done, Livingston won the meet with 161 points, just ahead of second-place Belgrade, which had 138 and third-place Lewistown, which finished with 131. The Blue Pony girls finished fourth with 88.

A number of Havre athletes did well at the meet, but the only individual to come away with a first-place showing was freshman Ivar Aageson, who won the pole vault with a vault of 12-0. Gunnar Aageson, Ivar’s older brother, finished second in the pole vault. The younger Aageson also finished fourth in the high jump.

“Both of the Aageson boys just did a great job for us,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “Ivar competed really hard all day and ended up on top in the pole vault. And Gunnar has been consistent all year in that first leg of the 400 relay and he got us off to another great start Saturday.”

While Nate Rismon didn’t win an event in Belgrade Friday or Saturday, he did place in three events. The junior finished second in both the 200 and 400 and also managed a third-place finish in the pole vault.

“Nate is definitely the man on our team,” Ita said. “He ran a really good race in the 400 and if it was five meters longer he would have won it. He also ran well in the 200 and did a great job in both of our relays for us.”

Other Pony boys who placed included Nick Keller, who was third in the high jump, Jacob LaBrie, who was fifth in the 400 and Zach Hunt, who finished sixth in the long jump. Richard Belcourt also finished fourth in the high jump and long jump and also joined Rismon, Gunnar Aageson and LaBrie on the 400 relay team that took first with a time of 46.25.

While the HHS boys had seven athletes place, the girls team boasted 10 and no Pony girl was more impressive than freshman Logan Huebsch, who paced the team by placing in four different events. Huebsch finished second in the 300 hurdles, third in the triple jump and fourth in both the 100 hurdles and long jump in her first divisional meet.

Another Pony freshman, Jordan Keith, also had a memorable day in her first divisional meet as she finished fourth in the both the shot put and javelin as well as fifth in the discus. Carleigh Rennick continued a strong showing for the throwers on the HHS girls team as she was third in the javelin and sixth in the shot put. Kristen Nash also managed to come in fourth in the discus and fifth in the javelin.

“Logan just had a great day,” Ita said. “She qualified for state in every event she touched, so that was good to see. Another youngster who is really turning into an up-and-comer in Jordan Keith, who placed in all her events as well. She is really coming on for us.”

The only other HHS girls to place in multiple individual events was Rachel David, who finished second in the 800 and fourth in the 400. The other Pony girls who placed were Naomi Terry, who finished fourth in the 300 hurdles, Kaylee Nystrom, who was third in the pole vault, Loni Waid, who was fourth in the pole vault, Ireland Coyne, who finished fifth in the 110 hurdles, and Megan Erickson, who ended up in sixth in the 1,600.

“We did about what we expected to do,” Ita said. “We have about 12 girls and eight boys heading to state. But we were really pleased to see the girls score 88 points because there was some tough competition. Rachel David had a great day and ran well despite having some issues with the 800 and Naomi Terry also ran well and made it in the 300 hurdles, so that was good to see. We had some pleasant surprises from both teams and we got a good number of kids heading to state.”

All of the Havre athletes that finished in the top six at divisionals will compete at the Class A state meet, which starts this Friday and runs through Saturday in Laurel.
