Part of 20th Street to be abandoned

Unless there is a last-minute objection from somebody, a small portion of 20th Street will be abandoned and turned over to the Havre school district.

The street is used by no one but school personnel and students, City Council members said Monday night.

No one spoke at a public hearing on the proposal, and the Council set a final vote on the matter for the Council’s June 15 meeting.

Council Member Allen “Woody” Woodwick said the school district has “some interesting plans” for the area. Parking will be reconfigured in the high school parking lot, making it easier for motorists.

The Council took several routine actions at its meeting Monday night:

The city will charge $100 for a permit to sell fireworks in the city,

Fireworks can be sold before the Fourth of July and prior to New Year’s Eve.

Fireworks sales have been covered under the city’s itinerate vendors license rules, but the city repealed that law earlier in the year.

There are only two fireworks vendors in the city limits, Mayor Tim Solomon said. The others are outside the present city limits.

Council member Brian Barrows noted that the $100 fee is exactly what it would have cost to have chickens in your yard had council approved that plan.

“One hundred dollars to have chickens, one hundred dollars to sell fireworks,” he said.
