Local Golf Report: Ladies have another special day

From Tee to Green...

For the second straight summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer my time for a special and worthy cause, as I spent last Saturday on the sixth hole at Prairie Farms Golf Course hitting shots for teams in the Golfing for a Cure golf tournament.

The tournament, which is put on by the Havre Women’s Golf Association, and which has been going strong for years now, is one of the best times I will have on a golf course all summer long. And last Saturday was no different.

While I hope I hit some good shots for all the teams that came by Saturday, my biggest joy was just being able to help raise money to help fight cancer locally, as well as see how much fun everybody involved had. And I hope I get the chance to continue to help do my part for the annual tournament because it has really come to mean a lot to me personally, and I hope I’m involved for a long time to come.

So, on behalf of everybody who was involved with last Saturday’s tournament, I will say thank you to you all, thank you for your hard work, your generous donations, thank you to all of you who put so much effort into making the tournament the special day that it is. And, most of all, thank you for letting me once again be a part of what was a great and special day.

Now to the results, which is really secondary to the cause itself. But, there had to be a winner Saturday and that team was Baker Amusement, which was composed of Paula Sheppard, Karla Bolken, Shari Baltrusch and Greg Baltrusch. Second place went to Diesel Doctor. That team was made up of Sarah Spangler, Carrie Kato, Maria Borlaug and Shawn Keeley. Third place went to our very own Havre Daily News, captained by publisher Stacy Mantle. The team was also composed of Amy Brown, Sarah Christenson and Pete Christenson.

So congrats to the winners, and congrats to everybody who played and who helped, including my good friend Kyle Sheppard, who refuses to let me hit tee shots for the ladies, and to everyone who donates to such a worthy and important cause.

The ladies also completed another week of league golf last Thursday night. D.A. Davidson earned high-team honors with 25 points. The team was composed of Mel Gilman, Karla Bolken, Paula Sheppard and Shari Baltrush. Ali Ward was low gross with a 41, while Paula Sheppard was low net with a 33.

Men’s league at Prairie Farms is nearing the halfway point in the season, which means tonight and Wednesday will see the first eight teams from the league qualify for the August playoffs.

Last Tuesday night saw Vic’s Place earn high team with 23 points. The team is composed of Lowell Swenson, Paul Dees, Kerry Ward and Tom Haas. Matt Hedstrom was low gross with a 1-under par 35, while Jared Gillen was low net with a 30. Heading into tonight’s finale, Dan Wagner Plumbing is in first place in the Tuesday standings, while Hole 19, Korb Construction and Rock Solid round out the top four. Vic’s, Northern Edge and Tilleman Motors are all also within striking distance of the playoffs.

Last Wednesday night saw Bear Paw Credit Union score 24 points to lead the way. The team was made up of Perry Ahern, Lowell Swenson, Jeremy Jensen and Brian Lilletvedt. Kyle Sheppard fired a stellar 33 for low gross, while Bob Moomey was low net with a 32. Master Sports leads a close race for the playoffs, while Aaron’s, BPCU, D.A. Davidson, Havre Ford and Michelob Light all have a strong shot at getting into the top four after Wednesday night’s round.

Finally, the tourney schedule at Prairie Farms continues this week with the annual NLASF Scramble. The tournament annually helps raise scholarship money for Montana State University-Northern athletics.
