Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Trey Scofield, Hi-Line United Soccer

Trey Scofield was made for soccer

Many people out there call soccer the beautiful game. Among those is Trey Scofield, the recent Havre High graduate and star of the Hi-line United U19 team. Soccer is his sport and it’s the world’s, too.

Over the years, soccer has grown more popular in the United States, which has led to an increase in the number of kids who play soccer. Scofield, who said he was not big enough to play football, turned to soccer, which is a sport he called “running with a purpose.”

This season, his third with the United, Scofield has been the rock of the United, the local club soccer team that plays against other teams from around the state. Over the course of the season, Scofield has developed into the team’s top goal scorer and has found the back of the net 16 times.

One thing that has helped Scofield have so much success on the soccer pitch this season has been the presence of Marcio Camara, a transfer student from Brazil. The two have turned into quite a tandem and a nightmare for opposing defenses. At times this season, Scofield said he and Camara have been marked by two or three players at a time to limit their effectiveness. Yet, the two have still managed to turn into a prolific goal-scoring team as Scofield said that almost every one of his goals has come following a Camara assist.

“We have messed with the defenses a lot,” Scofield said. “Sometimes they have multiple players guarding us so that gets frustrating, but we have done a lot of give and go’s.”

In addition to being talented on the field, Scofield is just as talented, if not more gifted, in the classroom. He graduated last month from HHS with a 4.0 grade point average and will attend Carroll College this coming fall to study engineering,

But thanks to his impressive play this season for the United, Scofield still has a chance to play college soccer at Carroll and has a tryout set up with the Saints later this month.

Regardless of what happens, the one thing Scofield knows for sure is that this coming weekend will be the final time he plays a match as a member of the United. The U19 team will be in Livingston this weekend to compete in the Montana State Cup and, after an up-and-down season, Schofield and his teammates are determined to end things on a high note by playing well against the rest of the six-team field.

But before taking off to the State Cup, where the United will open the tournament Saturday against Red Lodge at 8 a.m., the Havre Daily News caught up with Scofield for five questions.

HDN: What is it about soccer that made it become your sport?

Scofield: “I have been really into running my whole life and it’s just more exciting than running. I was kind of small, so I couldn’t really play football, so I ended up playing soccer.”

HDN: Are you a fan of soccer, do you have a favorite professional team or player?

Scofield: “I watch professional games a lot. I love watching Barcelona or Real Madrid, so I am more of a Champions League fan. I don’t watch much MLS. I like Robin Van Persie and Ronaldo, too, but everyone likes watching him.”

HDN: Scoring goals is difficult to do, how have you managed to do it so frequently?

Scofield: “I just have worked a lot on my shooting and my ball placement. But I still need a pass most of the time, I can’t dribble through an entire defense.”

HDN: What are your plans for the future?

Scofield: “I am hoping that I will be able to play soccer at Carroll, but the academics have always been the most important thing to me. So I am planning on going into engineering, either mechanical or electrical.”

HDN: What’s your favorite memory of playing for the United and what do you guys need to do to play well at state?

Scofield: “In the past we have really come together at state and done well. So playing at state has been my best memory. I think we can do it again and play well. We play two of the toughest teams in our division to start, but if we win a game we are in the semifinals. I just want to win at least a game."
