North Stars come on strong in Williston

The Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team made the long trip to Williston, North Dakota this past weekend, and after nabbing a pair of wins and playing some good all-around baseball, the trip proved well worth it.

The tournament began last Thursday and ran through Sunday and in that time the North Stars took part in five games, winning two and losing three. Havre actually lost its first three games of the tournament, falling to the LP Prospects 3-1 and Williston 5-4 Thursday as well as Regina 8-1 Friday. But, the North Stars rebounded Saturday by knocking off Swift Current 13-10 and shutting out Richland County 4-0 Sunday.

The highlight of the weekend for the North Stars came Sunday with the shutout win over Richland. Havre blanked Richland in large part thanks to the spectacular pitching effort of Dylan Carpenter, who tossed seven scoreless inning, while allowing just three hits and striking out five. He also had zero walks.

The offense for Havre got started right away and in the top of the first inning, Jake Sedahl singled to score Travis Roth, giving the North Stars a 1-0 lead. Then, Roth scored again on a second single by Sedahl and Havre led 2-0.

In the top of the fifth inning, TJ Lovenguth and Ryne Antley each earned RBI's as the North Stars built the lead to 4-0. Sedahl ended up with a perfect day at the plate going 3-for-3 in the win, while Roth had two hits. Antley, Lovenguth and Tanner Hentschel each added a hit a piece in the victory.

On Saturday, after dropping three games already in the tournament, the North Stars got their bats going and knocked off Swift Current in an exciting 13-10 battle. Havre notched 11 runs in the first three innings to grab an 11-8 edge. Yet, Swift Current got within 11-10 at one point before the North Stars added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning before cooing out the same in the bottom half of the inning.

Antley was outstanding at the plate in the win for the North Stars, going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in the win. Roth went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Sedahl, Lovenguth and Carpenter also notched two hits. Sedahl and Lovenguth also pitched in with a pair of RBIs each.

Earlier in the tournament Friday, the North Stars took on Regina and were held to just one run as they fell by the score of 8-1. Tyrell Pierce was hit with the loss for Havre after giving up eight runs but just four of them earned in seven innings, he also struck out three. Carpenter led the way for Havre on offense with two hits, while Antley and Boles each managed a hit, with Antley notching the team's only RBI.

On the first day of the tournament Thursday, the North Stars played two games, the second of which came against the host team Williston Thursday night. Havre was able to jump out to an early thanks to a two-run first inning thanks to a single from Antley that scored two runs. Williston scored twice in the bottom of the first to tie the game, but in the top of the second, the North Stars took the lead as Jerod Boles singled to score Brenden Danielson and Roth drove in a run with a fielder's choice to give Havre a 4-2 edge.

The North Stars led 4-3 after the bottom of the second and held the lead until the fourth inning, when Williston plated two to go ahead 5-4. Havre failed to score the rest of the game and ended up losing 5-4.

Gavin Gunderson and Carpenter each had two hits in the loss for the North Stars, while Roth, Sedahl, Antley and Boles each added a hit. Gunderson was hit with the loss after surrendering four runs in three innings pitched.

And in the opening game of the tournament Thursday afternoon, the North Stars lost a hard-fought game to the LP Prospects by the score of 3-1. The Prospects scored three runs in the first two innings and held Havre to just one run, which came in the fourth inning to hang on to the two-run victory.

Despite the loss, the North Stars got an outstanding pitching effort from Carpenter, who was hit with the loss. Carpenter pitched a complete game and gave up just three runs, while striking out three. Offensively, Lovenguth led the way for Havre with a hit and an RBI, while Sedahl added two hits. Gunderson, Roth, Antley and Boles all came away with hits as well.
