Obituary - Dolores F. Cikrit

Dolores F. Cikrit, MD, FACS, died unexpectedly on March 23, 2015, while on vacation with her family in Marathon Key, Florida.

Dolores is survived by her husband, Joseph Schmit; and her daughters, Sara Cikrit Schmit and Anna Cikrit Schmit.

She was preceded by her parents James and Florence Cikrit.

Dolores was born on March 7, 1954, in Havre, Montana, grew up in Big Sandy, Montana, and was a graduate of Carroll College, Helena, Montana. She then attended medical school at the University of Colorado, Denver. After medical school she completed a surgery residency with the IU School of Medicine and a vascular fellowship at the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, Missouri, where she met her husband.

At the time of her death, Dolores was a professor of surgery with the IU School of Medicine, and chief of surgical services at the Roudebush VA Medical Center. She was also a partner of the Division of University Vascular Surgery, Indiana School of Medicine.

Dolores was a devoted wife and mother and was deeply admired and respected by a generation of residents and students for her passion in teaching vascular surgery. She will be greatly missed by all in surgery at the VA Medical Center, University Vascular Surgery, IU School of Medicine, and IU Health Methodist.

She enjoyed spending free time with her family outdoors at Eagle Creek Park and watching her daughters' favorite movies on Saturday nights. She enjoyed reading, traveling and took trips throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. Dolores will always be fondly remembered by her family, friends, colleagues, students and all who knew her.

A funeral service will be Tuesday, July 7, at 2 p.m. at Big Sandy Methodist Church. Burial to follow in Big Sandy Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to service at church starting at noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Big Sandy Senior Citizen Center or Big Sandy United Methodist Church.
