City urges care in hiring roofers

Due to the recent wind and hail storm in the Havre area, property sustained hail and wind damage, and that has city of Havre officials worried.

Sometimes areas that have sustained damage like this attract some fly-by-night operations that are not licensed or insured, said Dave Peterson, the Havre Public Works director.

Peterson urged people to make sure, when they hire companies to do work on their house, that the contractors are licensed by the state of Montana and are fully insured.

Proper permits for the construction should be prominently posted, he said.

Peterson said his colleagues said that when hail and wind struck Billings last year, out-of-town contractors swarmed into the city.

It is especially important that the contractor be insured.

People don’t realize that if a contractor's employee falls off the roof and injures himself, if the contractor is not insured, it’s the owner's responsibility, he said.

Peterson said people with concerns or questions concerning contractors or permits can contact the City of Havre Public Works office at 265-4941.

A legitimate construction company would have all license and insurance documents readily available and should provide them without needing to be asked. With information so easily available on the web, one would be mistaken to enter into a contract with any company without seeing these important pieces of paperwork. As a license and insurance are the only requirements to be contractor in MT, asking for personal project references is a great way to thin out the herd so to speak.
