Local black powder shooters participate in Big Sky Games

Six members of the Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club participated at the Billings Rod and Gun Club in the 30th Annual Big Sky Games held in Billings Saturday, July 18.

They were joined by nine other shooters from Wyoming and Montana to compete in the Olympic-style event which had about 35 competitions going on all over Billings. Included among the black powder participants was 88-year old Frank Hanzel of Lewistown, who made his first appearance at the games.

Shooting conditions were excellent with the temperature very moderate in the 70s with a slight wind part of the day. Bob Doney of Havre was the range officer and Jim Griggs of Havre was the coordinator for the black powder event.

Results of the three target aggregate matches are listed below. “X” indicates a bullseye.

Junior Aggregate: Gold Katherine Dunn, Billings, 127x.

Women’s Aggregate: Gold Kathy Lynch, Havre, 113; Silver Tammy Griggs, Marysville, 98.

Percussion Aggregate: Gold Steve Martin, Harlowton, 130; Silver Bob Doney, Havre, 128xx; Bronze Roger Roebling, Dayton, Wyo., 126xxx.

Senior Aggregate (62 and older): Gold Roger Roebling, Dayton, Wyo., 131; Silver Bob Doney, Havre, 130xx; Bronze (tie) Dan Walker, Billings, 117 and Jim Griggs, Havre, 117.

One Gun Aggregate: Gold Roger Roebling, Dayton, Wyo., 127x; Silver Darwin Reynolds, Buffalo, 125; Bronze Bob Doney, Havre, 121xxxx.

Bench Rest Aggregate: Gold Jim Griggs, Havre, 133; Silver Bob Doney, Havre, 132; Bronze Kathy Lynch, Havre, 124x.

Pistol Aggregate — 2 Targets: Gold Darwin Reynolds, Buffalo, 126; Silver Steve Martin, Harlowton, 124; Bronze Randy Root, Havre, 118x.

Curley Wolf Aggregate — 1 6-bull target, 50 yards offhand: Gold Tom Griggs, Marysville, 39; Silver Steve Martin, Harlowton, 36; Bronze Dan Walker, Billings, 30.

Medals were awarded to first-time Big Sky Games participants including Gold Percussion Aggregate to Katherine Dunn, Billings, 97; Silver Percussion Aggregate to Frank Hanzel, Lewistown, 92x; Gold Bench Aggregate to Sean Dunn, Billings, 118; Gold One Gun Aggregate to Kathy Lynch, Havre, 107; Gold to oldest shooter 88-year old Frank Hanzel, Lewistown.
