Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Quinn Reno, Havre Middle School

Havre's Quinn Reno likes to play all the sports

Sometimes you hear talk about how the younger kids of today's generation spending too much time on their smart phones or playing video games. Sometimes, today's youth are even called lazy, but Havre’s Quinn Reno is anything but lazy, in fact, he might even be a little too active.

That's because Reno, entering eighth grade, is a four-sport athlete. And when Reno plays sports, he doesn't just do so casually, he goes all out. The eighth-grader not only competes in football, basketball, wrestling and baseball around town, but he has also traveled around the state of Montana and the country to go head-to-head with other great athletes his age.

While Reno excels in all the sports that he plays, he has had more success on the wrestling mat than anywhere else. In 2014, Reno won the Montana Middle School individual title in the 90-pound weight class and followed that up in 2015 by putting together a fourth-place finish. In addition to wrestling at the Montana Middle School State championships, Reno has also competed in the Montana Open, the AAU state tournament and was a member of team Montana at the Middle School National Duals, where he won three matches for his squad.

Part of the reason Reno has been so successful on the mat is all the time he puts in, not only practicing but also staying in shape. Reno is an avid weight lifter and dedicates himself to staying conditioned, despite his busy schedule.

The only time Reno doesn't lift weights consistently comes during the summertime and that's because his schedule is packed full of baseball games and the occasional wrestling tournament fit in for good measure that it's hard to find the time to get in the weight room.

But the time away from the weight room has been worth it because just like on the mat, Reno has had a prolific summer on the baseball diamond. First, he was part of the Wells Fargo team that captured the Havre Youth Baseball Association Babe Ruth city championship. Then, he was selected to be part of the Babe Ruth 15U All-Star team, which played in the state tournament last weekend.

Now as the summer is winding down, Reno has turned his attention back to football and is doing so at the 2015 Blue Pony football camp, which is being held at the Havre High practice field this week.

The camp is the first under the direction of new head coach Mark Samson and was open to football players in grades 6-12. The camp started on Monday and concludes tonight.

Yet, before Reno hit the practice field on Thursday night to work on some defensive drills, the Havre Daily News caught up with him for five questions.

HDN: Why do you play so many sports?

Reno: "I don't know, I just can't stand not being active and I am really competitive."

HDN: So of the four sports you play, which one is your favorite?

Reno: "Probably baseball. I really like the competitiveness of it and how quickly you are able to come back in games."

HDN: Do you like watching sports and if so what is your favorite team?

Reno: "Heck yea. I love watching sports. My favorite sport to watch is baseball and my favorite team is the Seattle Mariners."

HDN: What have you enjoyed the most about football camp this week?

Reno: "I have enjoyed working with Mr. (Travis) Dean and the quarterbacks, that has been fun."

HDN: What are some things you have learned from the high school coaches this week?

Reno: "I have been working on throwing the ball better on the run, when I am rolling out. And also just to trust my arm. Sometimes I have the arm to make the throw but I don't believe in it, so just trying to trust in myself more."
