Letter Editor: Drinking shouldn't be allowed at Sounds on the Square

Editor:

I have just finished reading the front page article on “Sounds on the Square drinking OK’d” (Havre Daily News, page 1, Wednesday, Aug. 5).

Why must the good people of this community feel that alcohol must be present at every event we have?

How does this look to our youth and nonalcoholic friends.

We complain that we must stop underage drinking, but yet support this kind of behavior. We have open container laws for a reason. You don’t need alcohol to have fun.

I have been a Hi-Line resident my early years before moving to Denver for my practice. Most of you know that Colorado has voted for marijuana law. Oh, wouldn’t that be a hoot if Montana as well legalized marijuana, too. We could really enjoy all the shows. And share with our children as well.

Drugs and alcohol were a problem here in the ’70s and ’80s as well. I guess some things never change.

Please make a change in your lives and attitude by setting a sober example toward our youth and those of us who pass through.

The honky tonk days are over.

Scott Seigel writes:

I have to agree with this letter. Law enforcement is already very busy in our town handling drunks and DUIs. Having worked with troubled kids at Havre Middle School I can state with certainty our youth romanticize irresponsible adult behaviors including drinking. The last thing we need is to encourage drinking at daytime, family-oriented events.
