Gary was born in Sidney, Montana, Nov. 18, 1961, to loving parents, Robert and Genevieve Kaftan. The family moved to Havre in 1966. The third of five brothers, Gary had a great sense of humor. He had a loving and forgiving heart and was devoted to his family. Gary's childhood was filled with fun and adventure. He participated in Boy Scouts and church activities. His church upbringing and grounded Christian family nurtured in Gary a strong sense of love, loyalty and a personal devotion to Jesus Christ.

Gary graduated from Havre High School in 1980. After high school, he worked odd jobs before heading off to Kansas for three years with his brother, Alan, to work in a meat packing plant. He then returned to Montana and went into the glass business in Wolf Point for five years with his brother, Rick. Gary then moved to Shelby; in order to live and work near his brother, Mike.

Ever the family man, Gary returned to Havre in 1995. He wanted to live around his new nieces and nephews. Shortly after this time, Gary and his brother Jon started Gary's Home Improvement, which they ran until 2012. Most recently, Gary enjoyed his new job at Northern Montana Hospital.

In July 2008, Gary married and had an opportunity to be a husband and dad to three children. The couple divorced, but Gary always treasured their family times in his heart. Gary was devoted to the community of Havre and his beloved church family at The Havre Assembly of God.

Gary is survived by his parents, Robert and Genevieve Kaftan; four brothers, Rick (Barbara) of Belgrade, Michael (Sandy) of Billings, Alan (Kim) and Jon (Georgina) Kaftan, of Havre; and aunts, uncles, and many dearly treasured nieces and nephews.

Gary will always be missed by his family and friends. We look forward to seeing him again in Heaven, healed of all his sorrows, with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Donations in Gary's name may be given to: KXEI Christian Radio, Havre Assembly of God Youth Group or the Salvation Army.
