CHS donates to Northern auto-diesel

Standing before 400 cheering students and their families in the Montana State University-Northern gymnasium Friday, Chancellor Greg Kegel accepted a $250,000 check.

The money came from CHS Foundation and will go toward the campus' new Automotive-Diesel Technology Building.

Foundation executive director William Nelson handed an oversized check to the chancellor at the ceremonies.

CHS Foundation is the charitable arm of CHS Inc, an agribusiness cooperative owned by farmers across the nation. The group aims to increase educational opportunities for those seeking to enter the agricultural industry.

Tim Miller, the organization's regional director, and Ryan Lammers of the CHS Milk River co-op were present for the ceremony, along with Jim Bennett, director of the Northern Alumni Foundation

Donors say the proposed building, which will be 7,000 square feet larger than the existing structure, will produce dividends not only in the form of providing industries and agriculture with much needed high-tech workers but also strengthen area rural communities and increase student enrollment at Northern.

This fall, the college says a record 287 students have enrolled in the celebrated diesel program.

Kegel said that in addition to enhancing the resources available to students, the proposed building, which is set to break ground in April, will revolutionize the Northern campus, with walkways and roads being rerouted for pedestrian and driver traffic.

College officials have worked for several years to raise money for the new building. Funds have come from the state government and a variety of private sources.
