Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup: Chinook beats C/J-I in big rivalry match

It was a busy weekend of high school volleyball on the Hi-Line, as district play is now underway. But few scores were turned into the Havre Daily for this weekend's Hi-Line Roundup.

Still, here's a look back at the past weekend in high school volleyball.

The match of the week was Thursday in Chinook as the host Sugarbeeters and visiting Chester/J-I Hawks went head-to-head in their District 6C East rivalry match. And as usual, the two bitter rivals put on an epic display with the Sugarbeeters winning in four sets.

Chinook, the defending 6C East champion, had to overcome some adversity though as C/J-I took a thrilling opening set in 29-27, as neither team refused to back down. However, the second set was a different story as the Beeters ran away from the Hawks 25-14.

And while the final two sets were close, Chinook proved to be too tough on its home floor, as the Beeters prevailed by scores of 25-21 and 25-21.

In the win, Brooke Nicholson had eight kills and two blocks for the Beeters, while Cortney Gunderson had 19 digs and Sierra Swank had 18 assists. The Hawks got 10 kills and five blocks from Allix Goldhahn, while Erin Wolfe and Gabby Mangold each had 10 digs on defense.

Chinook's win over C/J-I came on the heels of three-set loss to the Class B Malta M-Ettes Tuesday night. In the loss, Kelsey Mathon had five kills, while Nicholson totaled three aces and eight digs.

Thursday night also saw the North Star Knights take down the Havre High junior varsity team at the HHS gymnasium. The Knights won by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-12, in what was a hard-fought match.

Sheridan O'Neil had 11 kills for the Knights, while Kiera Miller had four blocks, Graysen Spicher had a big match as well, tallying all 28 assists for the Knights, to go along with six service aces.

Malta was back in action Thursday, and in a 2B showdown, the Harlem Wildcats were no match for the M-Ettes. Malta beat Harlem by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-16. Brooke LeValdo had three kills for the Wildcats to go along with three aces. Emma Humphreys added 11 digs for the Harlem defense.

Saturday night didn't get any better for the Wildcats, who lost to Saco-Whitewater. Harlem was defeated by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-21, though the Wildcats did play much better than Thursday night.

In the loss, LeValdo led the way with seven kills, while Jazz Bensen had eight digs and Kinsey Cornell had five aces.

C/J-I was able to bounce back from its loss to Chinook with a win over another old rival Saturday night. Against the Sunburst Refiners, the Hawks were sharp in a three-game sweep. C/J-I won by scores of 25-10, 25-11 and 25-17 in what was a dominant performance.

Allix Goldhahn had a big night offensively for the Hawks, totaling 13 kills. Madeline Woods added 13 assists and 1.5 blocks, while Jereca Tempel had nine digs.

Fort Benton was also a winner Saturday. The Longhorns easily defeated Hays-Lodge Pole by scores of 25-11, 25-5 and 25-5. Hannah Pimperton had four kills for the Longhorns, while no stats were reported by HLP.

Note: The Havre Daily News would like to remind area athletic directors that all home and away results need to be faxed or emailed to the HDN by Sunday night for those results to make that week's Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup. Box scores can be sent to 406-265-6798 or e-mailed to [email protected].
