Rocky Boy celebrates Native American week

In observance of American Indian Heritage Week, Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation will be hosting more than a dozen activities this week, ranging from the educational to the recreational.

"It's a means of reminding the reservation of our heritage, our culture and our language," said Russell Gopher, a member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe and who is helping coordinate the activities, sponsored by tribal entities throughout the reservation.

Stone Child College will be hosting a number of events in Kennewash Hall on campus, including a hand game demonstration in the hall's foyer Wednesday at noon.

Thursday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. there will be native drum-making and children's dressmaking in the Kennewash Hall Conference Room. There will also be a native cooking exhibit at the Jon Morsette Vo-tech building.

The Natural Resources Department will sponsor a turkey shoot behind their office building Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The Family Resource Center will host arts and crafts activities from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday

Leslie Lodge Pole will host a hide tanning demonstration Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings at the CCT Senior Center

A "Mini Tuff Enuff" contest will be sponsored by the Rocky Boy Wellness Center Wednesday starting at 10 a.m. The event is designed to test the physical strength and endurance of its participants. Entry fee is $10. The eventual winner will be able to take home all the entry fees, plus $100, and the second-place winner will receive $50.

The annual Native American week parade will take place at 10 a,.m. Friday with a community feed afterward sponsored by Plain Green. For more details on activities and events, contact Peggy Aquino at 395-4875, ext. 204.
