A soggy home run for Ponies

Havre High harriers race in tough conditions at the 2015 Havre Invite

The Havre High cross country teams get one day each season to run on their home course, in front of their hometown fans. And while mother nature made that one day a difficult one, the Blue Ponies made the most out of it.

Saturday, Havre hosted the annual 2015 Havre Invitational on what was a cold, windy, and rain-soaked course on the campus of Montana State University-Northern. And though good times were hard to come by, new HHS head coach Josh Holt was very proud of all of his runners.

“I’m extremely proud of all of them,” Holt said. “On a day like this, all you can do is go out there and give your best and all of our kids did that. It was tough out there, but they all ran hard and gave their very best.”

In the team competitions, the Blue Pony boys came in fourth place with a score of 130, while Central A rival Lewistown dominated the meet with a score of 25.2. Glasgow was a distant second, while Harlem placed sixth and Rocky Boy was seventh. On the girls side, Havre was fifth overall with a score of 143. Browning edged Lewistown for first-place honors.

Individually, and as expected, HHS senior Rachel David was the Ponies’ top performer. In the varsity girls race, David ran a 21:35 to finish in fourth place overall. Kim Parsell of Shelby dominated the girls meet.

Nicole Parsons was second for the Blue Ponies with a time of 24:31, which put her in 29th place overall. Rainey Stoner finished in 34th place, Amelia Miller placed 35th, Meggie Zook was 41st, Hannah Lunak was 45th and Marca Herron was 48th to round out the scoring for the HHS girls. In the girls junior varsity race, Alara Vogel, Adrienne Miller and Payton Healy finished 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively, while Mariia Makarova placed 24th.

“Rachel ran a good race,” Holt said. “She ran really hard. She just keeps getting better and she ran a good race on a really tough day.”

In the varsity boys race, the Ponies were again paced by Austin Jones. With some good times in front of him, Jones pushed himself to a 20th-place finish with a time of 19:06. Jacob Keller (23rd), Brock Ross (25th) and Lane Paulson (29th) all placed in the Top 30 for the Blue Ponies.

Rounding out the HHS varsity was Luke Karnauskas in 33rd place, Bobby O’Leary in 34th and Barrett Kilgore in 37th. Cameron Knapton was Havre’s top finisher in the JV race as he placed 11th.

Harlem’s Keahna Little placed 14th overall in the varsity race to lead all other local runners.

And while the times weren’t what Havre, or any of the other teams, would run under better conditions, Holt said his team can still take plenty away from Saturday’s home meet.

“I think what they got out of today was the mental side of it,” Holt said. “They all had to run in some really tough conditions, so today, they all learned a little bit more about pushing through adversity. And I’m proud of all the kids for the way they ran today.”

The Ponies have just one regular season meet remaining. Havre will be in Helena Thursday for the annual 7-on-7 meet. Havre then heads to the Central A divisional meet Oct. 17 in Browning and the Class A state meet Oct. 24 in Great Falls.
