A great last day in the Havre pool

Havre High girls stun mighty Billings Central in the 2016 Class A Invite

The Billings Central Rams have owned Class A swimming for some time now. In fact, the Rams have simply been one of the best swimming programs in all of Montana for several years now, regardless of classification.

However, the Havre High girls swim team made a statement Saturday that, maybe, the times are changing in the pool.

The Blue Ponies, Rams and Hardin Bulldogs got together for the annual Class A Invitational Saturday at the Havre Community Pool, and the HHS girls put together an incredible performance, scoring 233 points to run away from the field. Billings Central was a distant second with 154 points, while the Rams did win the boys competition, with Havre finishing third with 137 points.

The Havre girls, who finished second to the Rams at last year’s state meet, were impressive in nearly every race Saturday, including sweeping all three relays. The Ponies started by winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:22.18, while the Havre B team was fourth. Later, Havre won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2”09.34, with the B team finishing fourth again, and to round things out, Havre cruised to the 400 relay title with a time of 4:42.89.

The three relay wins were impressive, and should give Havre an edge later in the season. But, individually, the Pony girls were just as good.

Amelia Miller won two events Saturday, finishing first in the 200 free at 2:20.39. Teammate Lacey Huseby was also fourth in that race at 3:11.89. Miller also showed off her speed by winning the 50 free in 29.31, while Lita Cammon was second at 29.44 and Jackie Martin was fourth.

The Havre girls also got a win from Hannah Lunak in the 100 backstroke, when she finished in 1:19.10. Jillian Reighard finished third in that race in 1:33.70 and Hailee Kilgore was also fifth. Martin was also a winner for the Ponies, as she dominated the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:27.55. Havre swept the top three places in the race with Ally Padgett finishing second (1:36.33) and Jessica Otto placing third (1:41.32.).

In the 100 free, the Ponies were good, too, as Cammon placed second with a time of 1:05.71, while Aubri McCann was third at 1:08.94 and Lunak was fourth. The 100 breaststroke turned out to be a good race for the Ponies, too, as Alara Vogel was second on what was HHS’ senior day. Vogel finished in 1:31.16, while Otto finished second in the same race. Huseby also picked up a fourth-place finish in the 400 free with a time of 6:54.12 to round out the scoring on an incredible day for the Ponies.

Meanwhile, the Blue Pony boys didn’t find quite the success the girls did, but it was still an impressive final home meet for HHS.

Shandon Oberquell led the way with a win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:29.94, while Clayton Twombly finished fourth in that race. Oberquell also garnered a fifth-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 2:38.19.

Ethan Lines also won the 100 butterfly for the Ponies, finishing with a time of 1:20.07, while Twombly finished fourth in that race. Lines also finished third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:53.17, while Mason Sandstrom was fourth and Ammon Lines was fifth. Ammon Lines would also finish a strong second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:29.44, while teammate Dakota Acor placed fifth in that race. Sandstrom would add a fifth-place finish in the 50 free to his day, while Trevor Williams placed fifth in the 400 free and Noah Gjesdal was sixth in the 100 free.

The Havre relay teams did well, too. The Pony A team finished third in the 200 medley with a time of 2:23.87, while the B team was fifth. Havre also finished third in the 200 free relay with a time of 2:06.20, while the B team was again fifth.

And in the end, both Havre High teams made the most out of an important day. The Class A Invite gives the Ponies a chance to see where they stand against their two main rivals, and Havre proved it is right there with both the Rams and Bulldogs. Also, it was the final home meet of the year, and for all the HHS seniors, the last time they will compete in the Havre Community Pool, and they certainly made the most of it.

Now HHS will be on the road for the rest of the season, starting this Saturday when they compete in a dual meet with Great Falls High and CMR in Great Falls.
