Boys & Girls Club to get building study

The Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line will get a $28,500 Community Development block grant to have a study performed on its facilities.

The study will take a look at the building and grounds and determine what the club should plan for the future.

Krista Solomon, executive director HELP Committee and the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line, said the study will plan out the proposed fitness park that is going to be built behind the club and consider the possibility of having some parking in the back to alleviate pressure in front of the building.

The study will also take a look at the roof, the boiler and other facilities to see what needs to be done in the future.

The money will be funneled through the city of Havre.

Havre City Council unanimously approved the grant at its Tuesday-night meeting.

In other business at Tuesday’s meeting, council approved applying for a grant for a part-time misdemeanor probation office in the city judge‘s office.

The money will come from the Montana Board of Crime Control.

The probation officer position was a sore subject between Judge Virginia Seigel and council members last year, and city officials wanted assurances that no city money would be needed for the position.

The judge said that monitoring people who have been convicted of misdemeanors will help prevent them from moving up the criminal ladder to become felons.

Fire Chief Tim Hedges introduced a new firefighter recently added to the staff.

Joe Pigeon is a graduate of Montana State University and has been a volunteer firefighter in Belgrade.

Hedges also announced that Nate Courtnage has been promoted to captain.

Courtnage has been a firefighter since 2004 and an engineer since 2010. He is the department’s training officer.
