Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels

Laurel:

A Teddy Roosevelt impersonator visited Havre High School earlier this week to give students a first-hand lesson in history. Hal Stearns, a Montana storyteller, spoke last week at the Senior Center of northcentral Montana giving people interesting facts about Montana’s many small towns. These are just two facets of great programs sponsored by Humanities Montana under its Hometown Humanities program that is focused on Havre this year. We’d like it if the special program never ended. It has provided lots of cultural, political and artistic opportunities to the area. After the yearlong program ends, we hope Havre civic operations pick up the mantle and sponsor more interesting events such as these.

Both sides have kept their heads in the questions about whether satellite voter registration stations ought to be set up at Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. It is a difficult issue. There is no disagreement that it ought to be easy for people on the reservation and other rural locations in the county to access election services. But because of the computer system Hill County uses, if people gain access in Rocky Boy, they will lose it in Havre. By reasoning together, the two sides are working to come up with something fair for both sides.

Montana State University-Northern has increased its enrollment by 18 over last spring. That’s good news. Students around the state are learning about what the campus has to offer. There are lots of people to credit. In addition to providing quality course offerings, Northern has to offer itself as a welcoming place that is helpful to students. Faculty, staff and students at Northern are doing that.

The District 9-C basketball tournament starts next week. High school basketball teams from Harlem to Fort Benton to Chester will be playing and their local fans will flock to Havre. We welcome them all. Havre will be putting on its welcome hat.
